With respect to these conversations, I have heard that your airlines (intl.) updates Canada immigration about your departure from the airports.
As you may know, through the border crossings (road), USA updates HRDSC (for EI and Welfare ) as to when you cross over to USA.
The main reason why PR card (Maple card), came into effect in the 2002/03 was to catch the immigrants leaving the country to Gulf / Islamic countries where they donot stamp the anglican dates into your passport.
My Iranian friend, who immigrated to Canada in 2000, left Canada after a few days and came back during end 2001. However he got his citizenship by the 2000 first entry dates.

With the maple card / Canadian passport, it is not possible for you to cheat the system.

Hope this clarifies DSD query.

Peace
