Hi,

I stumbled on to this forum while googling for pursuing ms from a canadian university. Before poking members with all my queries, let me just give you a brief idea:

I have completed B.Com from Delhi University and right now, I am pursing MCA from Indraprastha University (in 4th Semester). I was looking out for alternatives after MCA and 2 things come to my mind viz. MTech and MS.

MTech, I have found, has little scope and is good if you are more into lecturer future. MS, I have read and heard, from outside India, has good scope, since it is research based and involves good remuneration.

I have a number of questions. I will start the discussion with couple of them.
1. Is it worthwhile doing MS after MCA? In case if I wish to return to India after pursing MS, then will it be valuable as against MCA?
2. I have stumbled upon a number of foreign destinations for persuasion of MS. Are canadian universities better than others and in what aspect?

There's a lot more I have in mind, confusing me. Hopefully, some of these queries will be answered here.

Thanks a lot for your time :)

And in case there's a thread/topic relevant to my queries, please mention the link. I did a search but couldn't find relevant discussion.

Everyone needs a little bit of guidance and in your case it is vocational guidance. I will provide you with my thoughts and it is to set you on a course that will enhance your life and career and the future.

Demands for a few of the qualified people change and the outlook with it changes and one starts to wonder if you are on the right track. When that happens, it is you who will have to ask yourself first. Did I do the right course to get you where you want to head.

Was MCA the course or would you have done better if you did MS? You yourself know that MCA takes you into a teaching career. Will MS get you into Office and into Research. If so, why did I get into it? Nothing is lost in education. So see how you can utilize the base that you have created and ACE the next Degree. And the next time AIM HIGH and achieve the top rank and score BIG.

Some of the degrees get you into dead end jobs. Hey, one more step like a four or five year Doctorate will push you to the top. So, will it be MS or Ph.D.?

Now you have to stop and check to see if you are on the right course. You are moving up in age. Lot of other things in life are put on hold. Income level is Zero. Expenses is all that you can see till that time. So, how do you get a balance in life and also in your bank balance and other items that are put on hold? While all of this is moving along smoothly, you get to see all of the others settling down in life or in a far away country and doing well to excellently. When that happens, don't look back. Look to the future and boldly go forward and correct the course and hold onto it steady. When you reach the end of the education cycle, take a breather and settle down in life after that. Only a few can do that. I know you can.

If you can Immigrate into a country and then do your studies, that will halve your expenses. So can you take a breather for an year and get a suitable job which will get you into that country. YES. But it might not be Canada, but it could be USA or Australia or Germany.

At the same time see if there is demand for MS Degree holders from India and minimize the cost of the education. If so, do your MS right there in India.

All of these involves evaluation and research. Now you know that MCA will not get you into Canada, at least not currently, when you try for openings here. So, see the other countries that have a demand for your current skills. If you find a decent position in that country, then jump into that location and move on in your education too.

I always said that Education is the foundation for success. Hope you find yours.

Good Luck.

FH

Hi FH,

Appreciate your encouraging words :)

I am still in dilemma. Immigrating per se, is not, an option as of now. At-least not in my consideration. Regarding education, yes indeed, I have appreciated every bit of Masters course till now and can feel the zeal of doing so. Moreover, being the education system of India as it is, the knowledge aspect is kind of lost somewhere. Research based course like MS will help me get that as well as, hopefully, strike a good job prospectus in future.

Anyhow, my queries still stand by me, irking for some light to be thrown upon them :)

Thanks again :)

MSc(or MS from US) in CS has two tracks. Research and general.

Depending on the university, standards are superior to India and Australia. On the whole comparable to decent(and in some cases to good) US universities.

However, vocational preparation is a very useful prerequisite.

By which I mean you should get all your ducks lined up before you pursue your masters---programming fundamentals, exposure to commercial software tools and preferably some job experience in development.

This could further lead to scholarships, teaching-research associate positions, etc.

If you want to get real value for your money, then you should obtain relevant post-MS professional experience in Canada. This could lead to a career path in Canada itself if you are interested, and definitely much more valued over MS without professional Canadian/American experience in the Indian job market.

DBMS, DWarehousing, DMining, Software Engineering, Architecture(parallel/distributed/VLSI/realtime), Business computing etc all have good scope.

But you will have to patient with jobs if you do not have any experience in development. Another reason to get some experience in India before coming to Canada/US.

Employers nowadays don't care if you are from an ivy league university. "Here's the input(requirements), now can you give us the output(complete the project)?"

Hi elmer fudd,

Useful input. Appreciate it :)

From your comment, I derive following 2 things:
1. MCA, the degree in itself, isn't good enough to be able to pursue MS. Certain experience in job market recommended.

To this I have a question, there's 6 months Industrial training, will that not help to get a brief idea about how things work?

2. MS from canada + Atleast a year's experience in canada = Good career path in Canada as well as in India.

One other thing, I was planning to pursue MS soon after completion of MCA. I know it might sound a bit odd but once in the job, isn't it difficult to leave it and pursue further studies?

And MS, Research or General? Is it up-to students to choose? And which one is recommended.

Thanks again for reply. And sorry for blazing out so many questions. I am excited by the prospect of pursuing higher education as well as a little scared.
