Dear CD's,
Yesterday one of my friends came to me with a question.

His daughter (he is widowed) is doing her 12th. std. in an international school. It seems that she is very impressed with Canadian history that she wants to do her undergraduate study (in any branch of Engineering) in Canada. It seemed that they were thinking that they will get scholarships.

My reply was that Canada was a very costly place to do UG course for the reason that scholarships were limited and as an international student she would have to pay 3 X than that charged for a PR or immigrant. At the end of the course, then they would be giving her (say) a 2 year work permit. Jobs are hard to come by for international students and she will be forced to do a labour job. After 1 year and cooked up IT returns, then she would be able to apply for PR which she can get in another 2years. And then the 4 year wait for citizenship. It does not seem worth it.

I suggested that they directly seek admission to USA where the job oppertunities are more and where the scholarships are more too. USA is more friendly and benefical towards international students too. They were not interested in USA (but then they are also telling that they can only spend limited money).

I further offered them the advice that they can study in Germany where there is no tution fee and hence expenses will be less. They donot prefer Germany as Germany does not offer them PR after graduation and students are expected to leave (in ideal cases).

I am meeting them next week to discuss further.

Is there any information that any CD can add on to this?

Impress upon them and tell them that it will take TWO good years to learn German Language, as their grammar is different to that of our English, but very precise. She will also have to learn a subject or two for her to get the hang of the terminology that they use in the earlier years of Schooling to utilize their Scholarship to the fullest, once she enters the University. That will be the best route for her to follow, due to the dearth of funds.

The best part is after her graduation from Germany and getting her PR. into Canada will be lot easier as they look for people with her background here in Industries with German Links, such as VW and SIEMENS et all. If I recall correctly, there was a poster from U.K. by name BALA (Balamurugan) who did exactly what I am proposing here and also got his Immigration to Canada. He landed but went back to U.K. never to return as the Alberta Petro-Chemical base collapsed and became uncertain. Currently he must be enjoying his stay there in U.K. and most likely will be a citizen soon, if not already one.

Alternately, study Engineering right there in Kerala and obtain PR and then take up studies as a regular Canadian Post Graduate Student and complete the same at her own pace or Work towards P.Eng. upon landing and excel in her own field.

that it will take TWO good years to learn German Language,

Learnt from people that many universities teach in English and that it is not that difficult to communicate in Germany (might be in certain areas) with just English knowledge.

Problem is Canada looks for 1 year experince for application of PR. How are the German immigration laws like? Are you expected to return back to your home country, once the education is over or will you be given certain years to look for work or can you stay back in Germany if you find a job immediately upon graduation.

It may be true that they are taught in English, but to enter into workforce and become a part of the society there, which is what is expected of them, will take more than the Engineering studies that they get for free.

They also steer them through the work locations and will provide them the opportunity to part take in their local Industries as the whole system is geared to employment at higher levels of postings after their Graduation.

Just like in any of the European or the Western Countries, the entry into the Higher Educational fields are not well utilized by their own citizens and hence they project their requirements and also provide inducements to others who are eager to get in and they also do select a few from the world population and offer them FREE University Education, hoping that they will like the country and the jobs that they are offered, after their education and settle down OR return back. There are NO strings attached to it.

The options are there for them to take up employment that is offered to them on a platter. A few of them do take it and settle down. Canada is not one of the destinations currently for those graduates as the employment pool has dried up. Nothing can be said about the near future as you might also know that the labour statistics here in Canada is moving from permanent to Temp and many or a selected few Industries have started to flee to cheap labour locations or have already left Canada for good. Plus the luxury of the Petro Dollar Income is over and the out look for the oil based Industries though may be stable, it will either be a flat or a downward movement as the Carbon utilization will enter into the Zero category.

A few of the students after graduation have gotten home sick and left back to their home countries to seek suitable employments locally. Only a few have returned after an year or two to settle down permanently back to resume where they left off.

Hope this clears your doubts that gets generated, as to what their future will be. I can only say say that they have a great future after their education and it is left to them to utilize all of the avenues that become open to them upon completion.

Future is what you make yourself as the doors open to wider horizons.

FH.

Four+ years of engineering in Canada will set them back substantially (150,000+). It would be worthwhile to complete UG engineering in India and move to Canada/US for masters. Scholarships are not easy for foreign students in undergraduate programs.

Btw, the US is now contemplating a six year student work visa for foreign undergraduates+graduates from STEM fields in US colleges. As it is, US is nowadays somewhat liberal in giving student visas.

This latest development, should it come to fruition, would be a game changer and give other countries competing to offer higher education services, a run for their money.
