It was called 'TUK TUK's in a few (locations) Countries. We called them Auto's and in a few suburbs where there are no Bus services, I used to depend upon these, even though they polluted a whole lot and no other service other than hoofing it was an option.
When we got into town and we were stopped at a light, a few of hem used to shut the engine off and wait for the change, the minute they start, we are into the dark thick plume of smoke and we used to cough and woof or hold a towel to out face to minimize the tearing up of our eyes. It was really pungent and obnoxious at its best and yet we lived with it, and it became a way of life for those that needed it the most.
There comes the BUG, yes, the peoples car and every one cheered and boy -o- boy, I thought that this was the greatest invention after the sliced bread. Little did I know that they were manipulating the emissions and they sold thousands of them, and a few million to the present count. Now they tell us what they did was a HOCUS POCUS and pulled wool over our eyes. Are they up the sh*t creek with billions to boot for their boo boo. And why did it take so long to find it? Who was asleep at the switch when they were pulling all of these stunts? I am flabbergasted by their whodunit tricks.
Now they are telling us that they are polluting the air ten times more than the Auto Rikshas that I used to ride in!! They were right, when they used to push their ADS on the TV. I should have translated it long back to get the hang of it. Now you got it too. Mmmm.
DAS AUTO.

India as a nation was always lazy in terms of controlling air-pollution. Even the regular Rickshaws carrying schools kids were using Kerosene polluting environment filling lungs of little kids.
Now with CNG everywhere I don't see that happening.

A Proud Indian Canadian
There was this recent news item about errant auto rickshaws demanding excess fare or those unfriendly towards passengers. But why paint all the auto rickshaws with bold toll free number on their back for the commuters to complain. Is it not insulting them and their work?
Will people belonging to different professions like IAS, IPS Officers, engineers, medical doctors, teachers carry such a banner behind their desk? And what about this MNC car manufacturer. More often than not, we become victims of food poisoning from star hotels, than road side canteens which serve fresh hot food and not from deep freeze. But the latter have to shut down unable to meet the corrupt ways of law enforcement. Tyranny of the elite.

I think the OP (with his advanced intellect (no pun intended) ) is referring to the VW emission scandal especially when he mentioned the Bug which probably relates to the Beetle .
Its a major blow to VW reputation and will tell upon its sales and market share in times to come..They have cheated and gained qualification by cheating.
I have always wondered why there are just a limited diesel cars available in US / Canada ... Apart from VW & Mercedes Bluetec , I have rarely come across any.
Till I learnt that the emission norms here for diesel are so high that its almost impossible to compete ...
And then to learn that VW cheated with installing software in vehicles which would show low emissions when being checked and 10 times higher in regular running ...
Now the Q which comes to one's minds is ~ Are emission norms in India currently for diesel vehicles nowhere near those here in North America ?
