Hello,

My parents landed on PR status in 2013 and stayed with me around 785 days and went back to India, came back again in 2016 and stayed with me around 585 days and went back to India. Total days spent here in Canada from 2013 is around 1370 days.

They are here and planning to apply for Canadian citizenship. As per CIC website to qualify for Citizenship you need to finish 1095 days. Now when I am using CIC timeline calculator then website saying they are not qualified yet and asking to wait for another 3 to 4 months.

What is rule for Citizenship:

Do they have to reside here 1095 days in last 5 years only to qualify?
They stayed here 6 years ago is it not going to count towards citizenship requirements?

Any inputs would be highly appreciated.

Thank you

Pre-requisites to apply for citizenship are:

1. You have to be a permanent resident, and
2. You have to physically reside in Canada for at least 3 of the last 5 years (1095 days)?

To answer your question: They stayed here 6 years ago is it not going to count towards citizenship requirements?
No, anything more than 5 years is not going to count, and it's a rolling 5 years, so every time you have to count 5 years from today's date. So from the date of application count 5 years prior to that date.

Thank you Sir Ji for reply and information.

I was in a wrong impression that CIC counting from day one when you become Permanent Resident of Canada. No choice and have to wait until days requirement going to fulfill.

RBO., Now that you know how they calculate the required time for CITIZENSHIP., and you have a letter from them., Please be assured..

Processing times of 12 months or more are not uncommon for citizenship applications. Processing times are determined by a number of factors, such as whether your citizenship application is non-routine, OR routine. If you have an application in and they have already responded and by that Section, then, you will be part of a citizenship ceremony, usually within six months of the test. Posted on..Dec 26, 2017.

Now ask them to prepare themselves with the Standard Questions from their book and pass the test in Flying Colours.

Good Luck.

FH.
