Poornima Sood had studied graphic designing in Ottawa. Subsequently, she worked with an animation studio in Montreal for 3 years, before returning to Mumbai in June 2003. Although it has been more than a year since her return, Sood is yet to find a job that suits her profile.

"The system here functions very differently. It is quite disorganized and some studios that have approached me have found my salary too steep to afford. Although I have been doing some freelance work here and there , I am yet to pick up something which will be perfect for me," Sood, 31, says.

Sood's dilemma is something that a lot of Indian professionals are facing once they come home. If the difference in work environment between India and overseas weighs heavy on one hand, the standard of pay and other work-related benefits are also shaping up as important points of concern.

Despite being considered a good career move for a long time, many professionals are now realising that serving a work assignment outside India does not necessarily beef up resumes. For many it ends up as a not-so-good career move.

"I don't know whether it figures as a good or bad career move. But I think at the moment, India is the best place to be , thanks to its booming economy. Personally, I feel that an international stint helps only if you are able to come back to the Indian arm of the same firm and don't have to end up in obscurity," Monisha Tuteja, a chartered accountant, who has just got an offer from an international audit firm, says.

Indian are giving back or goras are following their policy in India too!!!!

It is always not possible to start from where you left off in one country. The article also does not mention "how high" her salary expections are! She is getting job offers but she is not satisfied with salary offer. Indians coming to Canada face a very different scenario.

At least Indians are not saying we don't recognize your Canadian education or work experience in Canada, get equivalency, and get recertified in India.

But then I think they are doing it in a wiser way - indirectly telling the 'foreign trained' that your overseas qualifications is only worth so much - nothing more and definitely not what you expect. We recognise it- but consider it only worth this much since you are not trained in the 'Indian Way' of doing things!:D

Makes me wonder the oft repeated thought

Does working abroad for a few years rust our skills due to an easy changed environment and does it weigh against us if we think of return ??

In other words do Indian professionals work @ the same levels of dexterity and hardwork once they continue staying abroad ??

That is true!

If companies in India can hire somebody trained and experienced in India for less salary than a foreign-trained & experienced individual is asking, they would go for local candidate than foreign-trained individual.
