As far as I can see, there are no limits in IMPORTING currencies into INDIA.

If you are going through the Banking Channels, then, there is a record of the transaction and it will make the repatriation of the FOREIGN EXCHANGE a breeze. So, try to adhere to it. Carrying money into India has a few disadvantages.

If you are carrying less than $5,000.00, they might just wave you through. If it is over $5000, then you will have to declare the same on a form at the arrivals section. It is called CDF Currency Declaration Form. Over and above $10,000 gets you into a different category and you might be asked for other details, and get into more into detailed questioning. Also carrying larger sums on person is a travel risk. One such risk will be losing it and not being able to recover it. You also have the current Baggage Rules on the right hand side.

If it happens there are a few counterfeit bills in it, which they are able to detect today, you cannot answer how it came into your possession. Also, there are 'BILL SNIFFERS' at the customs check, and also at the security. What they sniff is for drugs and if perchance a drug dealer had handled it, you might be targeted later for Drugs.
