Gang-rape victim's family to get flat

New Delhi, Feb 21 (IANS) The central government Thursday approved the allotment of an apartment free of cost to the family of the Delhi gang-rape victim.

The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

"The union cabinet gave its approval for allotment of a MIG (middle-income group) flat free of cost by the DDA (Delhi Development Authority) to the family of the victim of sexual violence," said an official statement.

It said the flat would be given through a relaxation in DDA policy and guidelines for allotment of houses on out-of-turn basis.

The cost of the flat will be borne by the Delhi government, which earlier gave Rs.15 lakh to the victim's family.

The 23-year-old physiotherpist trainee died Dec 29, 13 days after she was tortured and gang-raped by five men and a juvenile in a moving bus. The accused are currently facing trial.
