Is it quite literally an oil well?

Malappuram, (Kerala) Oct 13 (IANS) In the fishing hamlet of Tanur near Malappuram, all roads in the past two days have been leading to the home of 38-year-old fisherman Abbas after he discovered the water in his well had properties of kerosene.

He dug this well a year back and this was his source of drinking water for his extended family of two wives and six children. Speaking to IANS, Abbas said he did not know if this was a windfall.

'Please let me know if this is good for me,' Abbas said.

'Ten days back when the rains stopped, I decided to clean my 12-foot-deep well. I drained out the entire water and, after a few hours when I drew water, I was startled to find the water smelt like kerosene,' Abbas said.

'I then poured the water into my lamp and to my surprise it lit and the flame was as good as kerosene. Soon the word spread in my fishing hamlet and now people from far and near are coming to see my well and also taking with them some water,' Abbas said.

His home faces the sea, which is just 100 metres away, and the entire village is as amazed as Abbas.

'Tomorrow I am going to use this water to see if it can run a two wheeler and I hope it clicks, and if it does, I would like to know if this would be taken away by authorities,' Abbas said.
