As this was first time I was applying for a visa for more than 6 months; I just opted to choose to get it done to avoid any hassle. Yes, I will buy the required electricals from India only. What i would suggest is that you do your shopping when you return from work to your home. Outside Runnymede station is No Frills. Shop there and bring it home. Once you have a bus pass then you have unlimited rides/ travels. 24 hour Rabba (a bit costly) is walkable from here. also...
