Henna

Henna is absolutley safe! Taken from a plant, the finely ground leaves make a paste (usually green in color) which is applied to the feet and hands as a traditional art known as henna. During a specific ceremony, henna is applied to the skin directly (using and applicator of choice) and once dried off creates a orange or red color which may last for upto 3 weeks. These types of tattoos cause no pain whatsoever as they only stain the top layer of the skin. To enhance the longevity of the design usually coffee, tea, lemon, vicks, tamrind, sugar or other essential oils are added.

Henna Art is over 5000 years old. It encompasses many different cultures and religious traditions.

* Arabic (Middle-eastern) henna features floral patterns applied to the hands and feet.

* Indian (South Asian) henna uses paisley patterns, floral, and fine lines applied to the arms, hands and feet.

* African henna art is usually larger in size and uses bold geometric patterned angles.

By tradition, when the henna is done on a bride in an Indian wedding the darker color of the design means the more the bride will be loved by her mother-in-law. Yes, if you are wondering, I do promise a nice dark color with the henna I use :)

Since Henna is pain free and temporary it has become a hot new trend among the western culture. Musicians and celebrities can be seen with henna in the most random places.
