TAKE BACK THE NIGHT
Taking Back, Take Back the Night.
York Region, Ontario
For 20 Years the Children of Northern Uganda have fled violence and nightly raids in their villages. They walk at night time to neighboring cities to avoid the terror ensued by the Lord’s Resistance Army against their families. If they don’t leave their villages at night, they will be harmed. Tens of thousands of children walk several kilometers every night. Tens of thousands of men, women, and children have been killed, raped, and stripped of their land because of the civil war that still wages in Northern Uganda. When the children stay in their village at night, they are not safe. Their families are not safe either.
We are all vulnerable at night time. There is no guarantee of your safety. 51% of all Canadian Women have experienced at least one incident of sexual or physical violence. Our children and Youth account for 61% of sexual assault cases reported to police Departments. Up to 75% of the survivors of sexual assault in Aboriginal communities are young women under the age of 18 years old. 50% of those are under 14 years old, and 25% are under 7 years old.
The Night Commuters of Northern Uganda have inspired a movement in York Region.
The Night Commuters walk every night to find safety. On September 28-29.2007 the community of York Region is encouraged to participate in a walk to state publicly that our community is not safe for everyone at night time.
Take Back the Night is an international event, with marches and rallies occurring around the world since 1976. This year, Women’s Support Network of York Region is doing something different. In solidarity, and to bring awareness and healing to our communities, we will be walking at night.
The Women’s Support Network, partnering agencies, and community members recognize that every night all people are vulnerable to assault and victimization. We understand that the community needs to come together and find solutions to this problem so that we can all take back the night and feel safe in our community.
We will be walking from Steeles and Woodbine to the shores of Lake Simcoe in Georgina, over a period of 2 nights. All proceeds will go to Women’s Support Network of York Region whose mandate is to provide support to those who have experienced or have been affected by sexual violence. With your help, we can put an end to sexual violence by creating awareness. We can also implement solutions to make our community a safer place for all.
Walk with us! The Women’s Support Network of York Region needs you!
Invite your friends, neighbors, family members, social groups, co-workers to join us on the nights of September 28-29. By calling The Women’s Support Network at 905-895-3646, you can receive your own pledge sheet so that you can be a part of making our community a safe place for all at night time.
