After struggling and working on odd jobs including the retail sales job with Future shop, I found my first field related job after 5 months of landing in Canada. Indeed it was the grace of God, I do consider myself lucky to get a industrial sales related job within 5 months.
In India I was employed at a senior position in Industrial sales. Before landing in Canada I had made up my mind to be focused and determined in looking for a sales job. I was prepared for the initial struggle and from what I had heard and read, it seemed that it would take me about an year or so to find a reasonable job. I started to focus on the jobs of similar nature wherein my past work experience would count. In India my company used to represent various manufacturers for speciality products. The same manufacturers had dealers in Canada and so I started to contact them one after the other. Also I contacted other competitors and related industries. I visited trade shows and exhibitions. I had developed a contact list of the companies I was interested in and one after the other started to pursue with them on possible opportunities.
One problem I did face was of that I had no Canadian experience and the other was the ability to concentrate after a hard day's work to look for a job. Still I started pursing. The employer who gave me the job initially did not give much of a look to my resume in-spite of the vacancy. I started rigorous follow-ups with him and arranged my interview. Since it was a related field and I had good technical knowledge, I was considered, but not before I had appeared for 4 interviews each of which would have lasted for 3-4 hours. The interviews were taken by 3 different persons in the company, which I believe is a trend here. What I was asked in the interview was a bit on technical, a bit on behavioural and a bit on my experience and a lot on if I would be able to take the job which was not to the level of my educational qualifications, of a BE and MBA. I humbly presented myself and stressed on my ability to address their needs.
Even after I was verbally told that the job was being offered, I did not receive the appointment / contract letter for about a month and I had to follow-up with the employer on a regular basis.
Ya, fellow desis, keep heart, be prepared for a difficult life but keep your head high and trust in God.
Congrats Vihal
Good to know your perseverance paid off.
Looking fwd to the day when I too would hv my share of this posting
