Anyone on this board ever been on welfare (social assisstance) in Canada? Was it easy to get? Were the caseworkers rude or racist?

"why people have to work in gas station when they can get welfare??"

Dunno....Maybe pride? I agree with you though..It seems better to be on welfare and try to improve yourself than get stuck in a dead end $8/hr job. Maybe there are some restrictions?

You can get welfare only if you have been" laid off" from your previous job. And that to they offer you lots of other jobs before you they can really put you on welfare.

you cannot get welfare if you resign or have been fired for some reason.

There is a social stigma attached to it. I have a friend who has been on disability for about 12 years. he suffers from 'depression' and claims he cannot hold a job. he is entitled to $1,000/month. you are not allowed to save any money and should you be able to save any, they will cut your payment.

the strange logic of welfare though is that if you are actually homeless you have difficulties in receiving it. you need a permanent address. the truly homeless thus have little aid. i believe they can get $200 in assistance. if , however, you have a house and children, you are entitled to a significant amount. the thinking is, i suppose, that if you have a house then you require more money to maintain it.

most welfare recepients are single mothers.

if a single man were to receive it, the authorities do all they can to cut him off the welfare roll. anglo saxon work ethic, i guess.

Is EI technically a welfare measure?
