There is no conventional or proper strategy to ask for a raise in salary. It's not something that individuals are skilled to do & little is written about it. Employees use different approaches such as they can write, discuss with co-workers & wish the boss gets to hear, discuss informally, they ask the boss politely, ask firmly, go over the boss's head or maybe even threaten to quit job, protected another job offer or simply quit job.
"my boss asked me to start a presentation with a joke ...
i put my salary on first slide"
Raise in Salary ?- in current times you can only ask that question outside your company, inside even your boss is waiting for his salary to get an increment. most of the bosses themselves are not in right frame of mind to get other's increment approved.
I know a guy for whom it happened in USA. He asked for a raise and was not happy when told that he wont get it this year. When he persisted, his boss told him that if he puts an adv in the local newspaper, he can get tonnes of resumes and can hire someone for 3/4 of the salary.
Unless you're very good at what you do, management recognizes it, and also a go getter, forget about the salary raises in the middle of the year. Especially, when you ask for it. Even then, the management in majority of the cases would ask you to wait for the yearly review. Once in the review meeting, you can provide the best of the stuff you achieved and most importantly how the company benefited from it monetarily.
The only way to get raise in salary is to find a job elsewhere. Unfortunately, that's the bitter truth. You need to get out of your comfort zone once in every few years.
