The reason is that I am tired of working in the field that I am in and I cannot stop working in the US because my green card application is tied to my job.I want to go back to school and start on a new business. Studying french for a while will be very low key and relaxing and will help me with the burn out I have experienced with my high stress job. I have enough to live on for the next year or so, so I am not too concerned.

Why don't you apply from the US, keep working, and study French while waiting for the interview?
I thought about moving to Montreal and study French but I changed my mind. I was talking to people at the University of Montreal and they were going to give me an admission in Certificate of French as Second Language Program. The reason I changed my mind was that I was worried about not being able to find a part-time job while in student visa and at the same time I am married with a baby and I was worried about health expenses especially for my baby and things like that. My baby gets free health care here in the US as he was born here.
So, I decided to apply from here and wait until I get my Canadian PR. I am still struggling to make my decision if I should apply for Quebec or Federal.
felka,
Sounds like a good plan. Good luck to you in Montreal. Please keep us posted your progress in French language and what you think about Montreal in general once you get there.
Take care

I would tell you one thing if you like Montreal go for your Quebec application, even with your English language you will be able to manage.
Koz what I have heard from my cuz in Montreal, most people understand some English in Montreal.
In my application I am claiming french as my first language but I am applying to the Federal Gov.
So the reverse must also be OK, claiming English as your main language but applying to Quebec.
The difference would be that for Quebec you will surely be interviewed but for Federal Gov. you may still have a waiver.
If you planning to study when you immigrate to Canada then Quebec could offer cheaper University fee for PR holders as they are subsidise firstly by the federal gov & secondly by Quebec gov....
Good Luck in your decision
good luck nirakar!
Keep us all posted.
Good Luck
