I am not sure about the other provinces but in Ontario, if you have done your CPA before immigrating to Canada, all you have to do is the CARE (CA Reciprocity Exam). But if you have done your CPA after arriving in Canada, you have to do the whole thing - School of accountancy, UFE, 'articleship' etc. Its a ridiculous rule.

Any idea how useful the CPA designation is having acquired a CGA in Canada? How is the market for CPAs in the US?

Sometime back the Candian Institute of Chartered Accountants had started a review of the Indian CA qualificcation for recognition. It seems the review has been completed-the Indian CA is still a 'non-designated' body.
Small wonder that most Indian CAs immigrating enrol for CGA.

Not a ridiculous rule at all! If the rule were not in place, CA aspirants otherwise educated in Canada would go across to the States, complete their CPA and then claim reciprocity in Canada. The reciprocity rule was meant to benefit immigrants - and I'm among those who have used it.

You're also mistaken in your assumptions about experience. The evaluation of experience is independent of the CARE exam. ie even after appearing for and passing the CARE exam, one has to submit details of their experience to a committee that judges its adequacy. There are instances where the committee requires the membership candidate to obtain appropriate experience even after passing the CARE, although most people that I know have had their experience recognized.

In the past the CPA designation got CGA candidates in Ontario into the PACE level - ie to write the challenge exams on the 4 papers in the PACE level. I'm not sure if they do that presently, though.

Northern height,
Hi,
Thanks for your nice words.

I still like canada though I have lost my PR status. This is the peak time for practising chartered accountants as last date for filing Tax Audit returns and VAT returns is very close. Some times i wonder in canada i was looking for a single job and here there is so much workload.
Satish has rightly advised to you to join CGA. That is only way to enter in accounting field there. I am not aware about your background in india. whether you was in practice or in job. if you was in job here in india then it will be easier for you to locate a job.
I tried for around four months in canada to get a accounting job but did not get any. While serving in a store in nights i used to think that what i am getting by working whole night (around INR 2000) , I could have got by filing two tax returns in india which would hardly take one hour.
I was always comparing my work in india with the struggle in canada. In break i used to talk with security guys who incidentally most of the time i found pakistanis. they all were well qualfied engineers.
Here are some of my suggestions though i dont consider myself worthy enough to deliver as i returned from canada without tasting success.
1) If you can afford full time study then dont go for odd jobs. offcourse you may do parttime or full time accounting job if available.Remember these couple of years of study will pave the way for a bright future in canada for you and your family.
2)stay away from negative thinking persons.
3) Never compare the ongoing struggle to your career in india. that will do no good to your efforts to built a career in canada and rather frustrate you further.
4) Always keep your family with you . it may be a bit costlier but your kids and wife's company keep you fresh and motivate you to put more efforts.
5) whenever you feel dejected and depressed and wish to come back to india ,just think about the huge crowds , dust , filth, pollution, noise, smoke, lawlessness ,crimes etc. in india.
6) and last but not least , have faith in the GOD.

with best wishes,

ptm

This is the most ridiculous rule. crenshaw states that it is for benefit of "immigrants" Well, are we not immigrants? Does it benefit us?. The rule says that if you write CPA after landing in canada, you do not get any benefit of exemption. Now this is really ridiculous. If CICA were to be fair, they can always examine the background of CPA and if they are satisfied that the person is immigrant then give benefit and if the person is staying for a reasonably long period , then he may not be given the benefit. So I usually advise prospective immigrant to write CPA before entering Canada which makes life very easy as one can proclaim himself as CA and get job easily.

As regards Crenshaw's logic that people will go accross the border and pass CPA, I do not believe that it is correct. CPA, at least for Canadian CA students is a tough exam. CPA is totally objective and computer graded exam while CA in Canada is largely subjective. Further CPA has high threshold for passing, while Canadian CA exams papers are tougher than CPA but threshold for passing is very low and hence CPA exam are tough . for example pass rate for CPA is 25% while for Canadian CA it is approx 55%!

In any case recently CGA has been granted same recognition as CA. In long run this will help immigrants as they do CGA with ease while in CA profession , they are allowed easy entry as to get a job in a DESIGNATED CA firm even at entry level is tough. (or was till last year- my own experience) This year there is shortage of good articles and hence you may find job with ca firm. Hopefully many more CGA firms will enter the market which will ease the problem
