You need a video capture cable or card. Connect the camcorder/VCR to the computer using this cable. Play the video and record the output to either mpg or avi formats. Usually the software comes with the cable.

Check out the cables/cards here -

Visit stores like Futureshop, Best Buy, Staples, etc. You should be able to find an internal video capture card or external device. Depending on what type of video camcorder you have (digital or analog), you have different devices available.

Also depending on the type of connection (USB, firewire on your camcorder & computer), you can connect your camcorder directly to the computer & with the use of software like Pinnacle you can capture video on to the computer, convert it into a format by which you can copy it on CD or DVD.

Thanks & rgds.

Rajan.

Throwing out the other possibilities too...maybe more cost efficient.

If your camcorder and computer supports firewire...all you need is the firewire cable( 20+$)cable and XP. If windows movie maker is not already installed you can download it from here for free
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/moviemaker2.mspx
It will help capture using the firewire technology.

Plug the cable into the firewire port the the other end to the camcorder...switch on and xp should recognise your camcorder and give you options on how to proceed.

Putting it to dvd(and not just data...which is as simple as copying the avi/mpg/mov file to the dvd) you need an authoring software(e.g sonic) and obviously a dvd burner.

Great replies everyone,

I have a sony cam and use it to make home videos. I have no problem downloading the content to computer. The problem lies in making small mpeg movies to be sent to frineds and family. e.g:
1) The moment you download a small 1 minute video into your computer
it becomes at least 100MB avi file on the computer. Less said the better about 10 minute size files.

2) This huge size makes it impossible to be email or send over the internet.

My method of making movies?

1) first i downlaod the video to the computer using the picture package software by Sony. Then i use the free software by TMPGEnc to convert the avi file to a small 10mb size of mpeg.

This can be sent by email to friends and families.

I would like to hear all your views on the video softwares.

:p . The rule of thumb is that one hr of dv footage(in ntsc/pal res) runs to approx 13 gigs.

I've always have better luck with codecs like divx(google it) for avis and sorensen for mov files. However not many in my family will have the time and inclination to download/install those .
bbmpeg is good for mpgs too.

divx and bbmpg are available for free.

Sending Mpegs through email is a bad idea. Quality is real poor. Better burn a vcd and send it by CanadaPost. Only few cents per blank CD and maybe a couple of dollars postage for 60 minutes. Cheap and effective.
