Hi There,
I am being offered a salary of 80K in Jersey city, near wall street. How does this package look? Is it too low, based on the location, I have 7+ yrs exp in IT. I have no idea about cost of living or how much would I be taxed. What would be the take home amount. Any inputs would be of great help.
Also how to manage car insurance, can we keep our canadian insurance, is taking car arcoss the border an option at all, how much will it cost and what's involved?

80K salary looks good if company offer you a good health Insurance plan for entire family.
Biggest headache in any US job is to negotiate for an attractive health Insurance plan with minimum co- payment.

you havent mentioned your job - salary depends on what you do! That said, 80k is a good salary for Jersey City. Like ani70 mentioned you also need to check for medical coverage. In the US its employer dependant and different employers provide different coverages. I have worked for an employer with excellent medical coverage and another with really horrible coverage in the US!
You can take your car across the border but you will need to get it retitled in the US if you are going to stay there for an extended period of time. You will also need US insurance which is, *usually* cheaper than Canadian insurance - be sure to get your driving records from Canada and your Insurance experience (no claims) letter from your Insurer.
Is 80k total package or base salary? Also, is it a body shopper/ contracting/ consulting company vs. direct employer?
NJ has high taxes and cost of living. There is a website where you can plug in your gross salary, state name etc. and it gives you the net/take home pay. Don't remember the address, just do Google search.
For direct employer, 80k is good offer. Typically medical or dental insurance cost is not much for single person/principal but for family/dependent it is usually very high.
I wouldn't recommend taking car unless it is only few years old. Snow, salt and rust does a number on the cars in Canada and rusting gets worse with time and humidity down south. Also, it is difficult to sell a car in US that has kilometer speedometer unless you get it changed by a dealer to miles...not a cheap proposition. Depending on where car was manufactured (outside NAFTA region), you may also have to pay import tax.
In most states, you cannot drive more than 30-90 days after relocation using different state/country driver license. Check with your Canadian car insurer for applicability in US and duration. Also check your car financing company if you still owe money. Most leasing/financing companies don\\\\'t like Canada to US registration transfer.
