Hi Folks
I am currently living in chicago, well not doing anything professionally but driving a cab. I got my PR last year in september. I was thinking of moving to canada pretty soon. I am not sure which place to move. I have an MBA and I worked for a civil engineering company (Accounting Job) for about 2 yrs after doing my MBA from US. Later I lost the job and went to chicago...drove cab for almost a year and half...and now here I am seriously thinking of moving to Canada.
What place do you guys suggest me to move. It doesnt have to be Toronto, I am willing to move to any place where you can find a decent job and the living expenses are not high....and you can save some money.

Thanks

Try moving to Calgary in Alberta. No guarantee though that you get a better job. So many people here driving cabs, doing cleaning jobs, working in retail stores, etc. You might be making more money driving a cab.

Having said that, there are good opportunities for jobs here. You might try to apply through websites also.

Better still, move back to India.

Rgds.

hey Raj
Thanks for the reply. I am currently in India but I am not really thinking of staying here. Is it that bad in Canada, after having lived in America for about six years I am used to doing any kind of work as long as it pays well. How is toronto though....Calgary I think is a bit too cold........
Any other tips on finding jobs or surviving in Canada.........

Response is appreciated
Thanks
Tahir

It's all relative. You will find ppls moving from USA to Canada. You will find ppls moving from Canada to USA.
No place is full of goodies.
No place is really bad.
It's the attitude that defines those terms.

Aah ... Cold!
A friend of mine, he had a job offer in NS in the year 2001. Tough winter and less desi community (as compared to Toronto). He refused and joined some manufacturing unit in Toronto with real low wages (as compared to his qualifications and experience). After 3.5 years he got a job in Toronto. Pay is kind of comparable to his qualification. But he is at the same point as he was some 4 years back.
Wish, he did not have worried much about NS's winter!
Moral, any place that provides good job, pays well, is good.

Only place which might be good weather-wise in Canada is Vancouver.

Be willing to do any job for the rest of your life. Driving cabs will pay you better than other odd jobs or even some sales jobs.

Having said that, right now there is a good opportunity in oil & gas sector, construction, etc. in Calgary. Weather is good in Calgary for 6 months of the year & in winter it does get cold. However, number of sunny days in Calgary are more than other places in Canada even in winter.

Rgds.

Hi Raj,

How are house rents in Calgary?
Cost of living?
Does one get odd job here easily?

Regards,
ms

House rents range from $400 to $1500 depending on the area & whether it is basement, house, apartment, floor, etc.

If you are getting a car, cost of living per month would be around $2000 per month for a family of 3-4. This is the basic cost without any luxuries. Odd jobs like labour jobs in factory, fast-food restaurant jobs like Tim Hortons, McDonalds, security, cleaning, jobs are easy to find. Retail sales jobs if you have the aptitude may also be easy.

Be prepared to do odd jobs for the rest of your life.

Rgds.
