Is it worth the money ?
do u get job after mba ?
provided u've studied hard
I read with keen interest the postings above on the subject of MBAs and would like to share my experiences for what it is worth:
I am a CA from India. After 3 years of work,I was faced with the same situation as jmuzz above in terms of deciding where to do the MBA.Ultimately, the cost factor became the eliminating criterion and a good school in the Philippines - The Asian Institute of Management won out.I graduated from AIM in 97 and was able to secure jobs in Singapore, Europe and now in North America.I am pleased to inform you that this school is well known here in Canada (partly because it has an affiliation and exchange program tie up with theUniversity of Western Ontario andalso McGill in Quebec). Most employers, if,in an interview you come across well as good English speaking skills, good technical knowledge and strong interpersonal skills will hire you.It all really depends on your luck, abilities and what the employer is looking for.
However, of late, after immigrating to Canada about 3 years back, I have heard and seen of many sad tales of fellow desis who graduated here and are unable to find jobs here or in USA.Then their investment in MBA goes waste. If they are prepared to invest in a business or start a business then it may be worthwhile to pursue since either a job or a business can help repay the loan. Invariably most fellow desis want to have a job in a bank or some well known place, and if that doesnt happen, the pipe dream is burst. So beware of the realities of life here and take a decision accordingly.
Here age discrimination exists(though not to me).Again I have only heard of it so I cannot confirm with absoluteness. This means that if you are over 40 and have a job and settled HERE in Canada, then think twice before investing in an MBA.After 2 years of study, you become older and it might be more tougher to find jobs.Again, nothing is impossible and there are old people who have found jobs and are working.
Hope that helps

I don't feel its worth spending so much money (40k plus) for a Canadian MBA...
Hello everyone!
I have just joined this website and already experienced a lot of mixed opinions!
I have TWO main queries. But before that briefly about myself: IIT -Delhi graduate working in HCL Tech (IT) India for past 2.5 years. Already applied for Fall 2004 MBA to selected Canadian Schools - Toronto, UBC, York, McGill, Alberta and McMaster. Working on Ivey. GMAT: 710, TOEFL: 300. No other option but Canada (please don’t ask why; of course due to personal and financial constraints!!).
1. My first concern: FUNDS.
My personal funds are good enough only to finance my MBA partially, say first year fees + living, although the schools' fees vary in amount and limitations imposed. For e.g. UBC gives a direct Bank loan (w/o a co-signer) in contrast to University of Toronto and Ivey that ask for a co-signer. The total amount is also less in absolute terms for UBC and a shorter duration course saves the opportunity costs. But the jobs on the west coast are not many in number (first hand info). I am currently exploring all possible options for arranging some aid/loan for my studies. I am sure there are many more people with similar financial restrictions but still managed to arrange additional funds or convince the VISA officers.
Anyone, please guide me:
- Of options where, my (Admit from Univ) + (competitive test scores) + (Strong academic and professional background) can waive me the requirement for the “co-signer” for loans from Canadian Banks. I am sure there must be some options in such a “Welcome professionals” country. This option in India is limited because of high collaterals.
-Of any other options that I may be unaware of at this stage
2. My second concern (and most common): JOB after MBA
I plan to work for a few years (< 5) in Canada (wherever and in whatever my MBA would fetch me), before moving back to India. However, after reading the strong pessimistic (mixed with scattered positive) views on this website, my first hand view about Canada stands “dismissed”!
- Are there no jobs for professionals in this country? Or is it only with the “expected jobs”?
- If I am ready to start off with medium range salaried job after completing my MBA from some decent Canadian B-School is, are there still no jobs for me?
- How does one earn the points for PR? What is the right time to apply for it? Is it possible (and beneficial) to apply it from India or wait until one is in Canada? Is it possible at all to apply PR along with the Student Visa?
Thanks in advance for any guidance and help to my case. Good luck to all!

Ateet Agarwal
