Hello all,

We're looking to choose between settling in Toronto or Calgary, Alberta. Looking for some feedback on the difference between the two in the following areas:

1) Income Taxes
2) Sales Taxes
3) Public Transportation
4) Cost of Living (rent, food, utilities, etc.)
5) Weather
6) Health care
7) Family Friendly Environment (I have two little kids)

Thanks!!

Hi there
Of course, Calgary is the best city in Canada to live nowadays
Lots of JOBS in Calgary as city is booming right now
GST 7% BUT no PST
Public Transportation is good
Cost of living is cheaper than Toronto
Weather is Fluctuated
Health Care is also good and Less Crime compared to Toronto
I also moved from Toronto to Calgary last year and i think Calgary is much much better than Toronto

I wouldnt make any blanket statement like"lots of jobs in Calgary". The job market is booming, but that does not mean anyone (and everyone) will get a job as soon as they arrive. Todays Calgary herald carries a story of a Canadian family who moved here from Ontario last spring, they were unable to keep up with rents and bills and had to move to a shelter run by a charitable organisation. They were very relieved with the $400 AB checks as they say they will now be able to afford an apartment.

I agree with most of your other statements however:

Cost of living is quite cheap (except in the housing area where house prices are going through the roof), there is no PST (which atomatically translates into a 7% discount on everything you buy). I dont know about public transportation as I dont use it. Weather can be very severe but this year we are having a mild winter - in fact I believe this winter is more severe in Toronto than Calgary! Health Care is good, but you do pay for it.

Try to get a job quickly. In Toronto address sometimes matters for jobs, not so sure for Calgary but I think should be O.K. I could find many offers for contract when Ilooked for the job through workopolis.ca

After stabilizing yourself initially you have more choices.

I used public transit for almost a year.

Depending on the route & the office times, the frequency of buses differs. During rush hours, buses are every 15 minutes in busy routes. Otherwise every 30 minutes & after 6 p.m. every 45 minutes for most of the routes. Local trains are every 10 minutes & during rush hours every 5 minutes.

For a route which now takes me 20 minutes by car, my commute times were between 1 hr. to 1 hr. & 30 minutes while using public transit.

The cleanliness is very good except when it snows. During rush hours, it is generally jam-packed & you have to stand.

Rgds.

Hi
As far as Jobs are concerned, Edmonton might offer more, as lot of manufacturing industry and some call centres are located here.
Cheaper than Calgary
Weather can be harsh.
