I have not seen anybody checking IDs. You can buy tickets in India and pay by cash in Indian rupees.
I think it would take around 1-1/2 to 2 days by train for Cochin to Delhi. You might want to calculate the oppurtunity cost vs savings.

They check for some ID in my case i showed them my visa card as it had a photo on the back.
