If someone has a US visa (10 yr. multiple entry) which was issued while they were living in India and now they land as a permanent resident in Canada, are they required to get a new visa issued from the local office?

Or is the old visa still valid until it expires?

Old visa still valid because they are still citizen of India and passport holder of India.

Thanks Charlie! Are you aware of any such cases that have travelled to the states without an issue?

Also, if someone case share either

a) a known case
b) some official documentation on this

I would really appreciate it.

My mother-in-law has a 10 year multiple visitor visa issued from India and has traveled about 4 or times to US (and Canada), both directly into US by air and by land through US-Canada border.

The only thing one has to make sure is to surrender the I-94 when leaving for the final time. For ex:, if the person crosses the land border several times, the last time he/she leaves the US, the I-94 needs to be given up.

The first time one enters the US for that particular trip, that person would go through US-VISIT (a politically correct name for fingerprinting and photograph) and will be issued a multiple entry I-94 for $6 USD. The $6 is charged only across the land crossing.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Dimple. Is she a PR though? The thing I want to confirm is that the US visitor visa issued in India is also valid once someone becomes a landed immigrant. Which is what Charlie seems to be confirming, I was wondering if there was any documentation regarding this on the net just in case there's an issue at the border.

Yes BL, there shall be no problem for a PR of Canada to visit USA on a visa issued prior to his becoming a PR from some other country. Visa requirement for Canadian PRs started on March 17, 2003, and I travelled with my friend in May 2003 to USA (to appear for our CPA exam) wherein I had a visa issued in Canada in april, and he had his visa on Indian passport issued issued in Indonesia for 10 years.

Since then my friend, who is still a PR and not a citizen has travelled to USA a few times on the same visa issued out of Canada.

I concur with Chandresh. As long as the visa is valid, there will be no issues. No, my MIL is not a PR.
