Jake,
Not to offend you.
I know personally in Canada (Let us take IT people and the people i know from CD out of it)
1 chartered accountant in Canadian tire and his wife a manager in an engineering co.
1 Chartered accountant from Scotia bank and his wife a finace professional from a leading insurance co..
1 environmentalist (now retd. his last salary $200K)
+ list goes on
I also know :
2 architects - $10 an hour
1 agricultural professional- $10 an hour
1 chemistry professional - $14 in a labour job
1 business analyst /project manager- $14 in call centre . now lay off
1 civil engineer- security job $10
1 electrical engineer - $9 labour job
2 mechanical engineer- $10 labour job
+ list goes on.
I could invite people in list 1 to my house. but for them or me it would not change their life so much.
I could invite list 2 to my house (which i do generally) and there you will find true love and sincerity.
And just b'cos i know list 1 does not mean i donot know list 2 or do not care what list 2 do in Canada.
Just my feelings.

Then you are right in mixing with and identifying with the group that helps you feel comfortable. You dont have to validate/justify your choices to me
