You can buy a Mercedes S class , BMW 7 series and a Audi A8 in diesel too. India is also buying more diesel cars every year. The North Americans are way behind the rest of the world in the automotive industry. But then the Norh Americans are way behind Europe in everything!

Agreed. But is'nt this like pushing the problem rather than fixing it ?
I will be more intrested in changing my driving behaviour. I consider that as a long term solution ;)

Don't run ur heater or A/C. That'll save u a lot. :D

Optimum mileage I get in Camry V4 is between 80-100 KM/hr though it's hard to keep myself within that limit :D My wife's not gonna like this part ;)

don't carry unnecessary heavy things in the car. Get the car serviced on time.

About the service I have noticed each time that if I exceed the time or mileage by more than 2000 KM it does affect the mileage ( u might not even notice it because it's only 3-4 KM initially.) Also once in 5-6 mths put in a next step higher grade gas.

Hope these help

The most neglected are the tyres. Always ensure that your tyre pressure is at the manufacturer recommended level.

And buy Manual transmission cars. come on we are Indians, we know how to drive Manuals. (I hate the word stick shift! Just what the hell does it mean? Even worse is the word stick!). Apart from giving better mileage, Manual transmission cars are infinitely more fun to drive too.

Tyres or Tires?:)

Most guys I speak to agree with you :) I enjoy driving an automatic because it allows me to multitask ie/look in the mirror, fiddle with the stereo, :p

when you drive a manual car, you have to focus and think about 'shifting' and thats too much work :D

Both spellings of Ty and Ti are accepatable for T(y)ires.

Manuals are fun indeed. Can't seem to find one that easily these days. One of the reason being the automatics have technologically improved over the years and have closed the gap in terms of reliability, fuel efficiency and price difference (in N.A, that is).

And no, you don't have to focus on shifting. You just do the fiddling and "multi-tasking" with one hand and use the other on the gear stick and worry about steering on an as needed basis. (OK, I am tempted to put some disclaimers here...:D )

Though i did not want to be seen as a person replying to each and every post in CD, this topic caught my attention as i have been trying my level best to save on gas and i would like to share it with my CD fellow people.

1. When buying gas always buy on a PC mastercard or a CIBC dividend card or other such card. You get 1 % cashback/ redemption for points etc..
2. Also use all "Extra card" such as Esso card, petro points card, Shell airmiles card etc..
3. Try to fill your tank at the cheapest gas time. US weekly inventory comes at 10:00 am every wednesday (see your online paper for inventory statistics). In general if Gasoline stocks, Crude oil stocks reduce, it means that there will be a price surge on Thursday. In such cases fill on Wednesday night. If Gasoline stocks, Crude oil stocks lower, then the rates will be reduced by thursday night. fill on that day. Gas is cheaper on the night than in the day. Also on the route of commute, see which gas stations offer the lowest price and fill in those stations. Also read online papers during office time to see the political situation in Nigeria and Iran, 2 countries which has currently an impact on world oil prices. Also fill when prices are low (even 10 litres) .Donot fill when gas tank is empty and gas price is high. In this case fill 5 litres and wait to see if the price becomes low in the next day. With this you can easily save 5% on Gas.
4. Fill tire/tyre pressure in gas stations offering FREE AIR. you save 25 cents per fill.
5. If you are the first person who stoped in a red light and it is a major intersection, switch off your A/C or heater/ radio and switch off the engine. You will save atleast 90 second worth of gas.
6.if you are far away and see the light turning to Red, take your feet off the pedal and let the car roll slowly to the redlight intersection. Do not acceleare and put brakes just before the redlight intersection.
7. Once you stop at a red light intersection, stop 10 feet before the stop line. When the traffice light turns yellow at the other intersection, slowly accelarate your car and by the time, the traffic light turns green you are already moving. This prevent sudden accelaration to your car which consumes more gas, can skid your car and damage the tires/tyres in a rainy or snowy conditions.
I save 10 - 12 % of my gas cost by these techniques.
