How to get success?
By:

I stumbled upon Canadian Desi today just by pure fluke. My boss advised me to put an advert in the classified section of this awesome web page. I just could not help stealing a bit of my office time to read the articles of different people. I have friends and families who have moved into this country. Some are successful and some are not. Therefore, I am not very surprised to see on the forum a mixture of both successful and not so successful (YET) people.

The reason why I am writing today is that a very important man, my dad told me before I left India for Canada with my husband on a summer day of 2002, “Associate yourself only with successful people or with positive people.”

What surprises me with many of the articles is that people seem to claim ignorance to the job market in Canada before they land here. Not that I had many friends and relatives here to the contrary we both knew nobody in this cold country, but before we accepted this as our place of stay forever we did a considerable study about it. We knew from the beginning that nobody in Canada is going to wait with open arms to hire us even though both my husband and I are MBA’s from a prestigious college in Mumbai.

We came to this country and many people who claim to be well-wishers started discouraging us as to not to apply around and waste time, but to take up odd jobs like labour etc.

Since I was working previously with a multinational electronics company as a brand manager I got a job within 15 days of landing with same company in Canada but not an office job. I started of working for the store in retail sector.

OK so I got a job not a huge break but we were paying our bills. Now it was my husband’s turn he was always into freight forwarding and shipping. (Not shipping and receiving but shipping LINERS). He had in the past worked for several international companies in India as well as in Dubai. He had contacts since it was international trade many people already knew him. However, out of job means out of contact list. Many people discouraged him in applying in the field of shipping here. He said nobody would ever recruit you, as you do not have “CANDIAN EXPERIENCE”. In addition, shipping industry is full of GORA’s so you do not have a chance.

So the next step – Invest. If you do not have a job but have reasonable money, make the money work for you. We invested in the payphone business. Many people discouraged as again. Who uses payphones? Everybody has cell phones. Nevertheless, we made a decision so we stood by it. We invested less than CAD $20,000 and became proud owners of payphones in Toronto. The return on out investment was over 45% p.a. so we bought a few more.

Now on December 2003, 1 year 4 months and 10 days after we have arrived in Toronto for the first time, I have quit retail. Now I am a sales manager in a telecommunication company. I have a midlevel payphone business, which makes money on its own while I work and my husband is a senior sales executive in the best shipping company of the world with excellent salary, company car, laptop, cell phone and a lot more perks. WHAT DID WE DO?

We did not listen to any negative suggestions. We did not loose heart when someone told us we are making wrong decisions or things not possible. We quietly started ignoring people who cried and complained all the time. We listened to what my Dad said “associate only with successful and positive people.” Please you people do the same.
LOVE AND REGARDS,

I would say the most important thing in life is LUCK.

I did exactly what the article says - associated with successful and positive people. For me it was rather easy because I myself had a successful background and the first person I met in Canada was a very well respected and highly successful and yet one of the most simple gentleman, and he guided me and introduced me to quite a few successful people - both in business and in jobs.

I did not even hear from many people that I should take up any job - they rather advised me to take up a good job as a first job, rather wait for it and encouraged me and morally supported me.

I looked at businesses like Tim Hortans, A&W, Buck or Two, Vending machines, pay phones, Bulk Barn, Baskin Robbins, Print Three etc. etc. but somehow the things did not work out either due to my lack of experience in retail business or due to lack of good location at the right time. After waiting for 9 months I finally took up a job at Krispy Kreme.

So, luck plays a very very important role in our lives - but I agree, being positive thinker is the first requirement.

And let me tell you - it matters a lot if you come to Canada with experience of having worked with a real \"multinational\" (in this case Sony and the shipping company). I used to work with a big company - having a turnover of US$ 300mn and a group turnover of about US$ 700mn - but it was a localised company, not known to anyone in Canada. A senior executive of Birlas or Modis or Essar or Piramals etc, has less chances of an early break in Canada when compared to a middle level or even junior level executive from Amex/Citibank/Sony/Ericsson/BA/etc. back home.

I agree with you Chandresh. I find myself in a much better position compared to some highly educated people I know. I attribute a whole lot of that to being at the right place at the right time. As to what I have done with the initial break, I attribute that to myself...still a lot to luck too. It is true that there is no magic bullet. One size, unfortunately, does not fit all. However, when one is already in a tough situation the only thing that can probably be changed, is ones own self.

I thought the article will particularly be helpful to those who are still struggling here. I hope we can encourage people not to get too mired in negativism to see anything else.

I actually find 'associated with successful and positive people' a bit flawed. If all you measure success is by what you do for money, then it surely will help.
I'm one of those who think that success is often not measured only in $.
e.g I had this gentleman trying to sell me a bi-energy heating system for my home. He mentioned(in other words) to me that he realised, late in life, success is not only measured by the $ you make but by the way you sleep at night. He used to be a high flying accountant with Arthur Anderson and has made a lot of money. However he recently gave up that life and now sells heatpumps making much less. Being divorced twice has thaught him a lot of things including the fact that he did not spend time with his kids when they were the age of my children. He is going to Bodhgaya next month to meditate for a month. I would hate to be in that position when I am 60.

Anyone else have any comments on the article?

It is a nice article and the intent seems to be to inform people to not get caught up in negativity rather focus on the positives. This is what my advice would be to any prospective immigrant too. Do no ignore the negative stuff, read all about it before coming here and acquaint yourself with the reality of life here. But once you land, block it off and try to keep yourself focused on what YOUR goal is. Work in that direction and ignore any discouragement you get from others.

But yeah, I don't believe in associating myself only with successful or positive people, because I don't know anybody who's successful or positive all the time. People go through various patches in life (I know I have) and I'd rather associate myself to the full spectrum. One thing I've found is that I learn something from everyone I meet, no matter what kind of person it is. Some teach me what to be, others what not to be, but teach they all.

And I agree with you guys that luck does play a part. I do consider myself extremely fortunate and being in the right place at the right time does help. But until I win the Super-7, I'll believe that luck by itself does not do anything, my effort coupled with luck is what really pays off. (And even if I win the Super-7, I'll still feel the same way because standing in those lines sometimes to buy the ticket is no piece of cake :) )

I do not understand the reason why your diploma has been approved without having to pass the examinations.

Well, the reason really seems to be the rocks they found on Mars, hope the rover does a good job analyzing them.
