Read a great book recently? Let's hear about it! If you're like me and you love to read, then you are always on the search for good books to read...I for one have recently read The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, an older book but I just got around to reading it and I must say it is fantastic. Talks about following your life passion and listening to the language of the universe.

Another book I've recently read is Siddhartha, by Hermon Hesse, again, another "deep" book that talks about life and achieving ultimate happiness and the journey that you go through to achieve it. (assuming the fact that you ever get there!)

Another book I read recently was The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri. This book is about a young couple's move from India to America and the life they build there, all the ups and downs they go through, the successes and failures and of course the trails of bringing up their "American" children while trying to preserve and pass on the traditions of their homeland. It was a book that I could relate to to some extent.

Has anyone else read any of the above? What did you think?

Right now I am reading Queen of Dreams by Chitra Divakaruni...and so far I'm totally hooked!

The Alchemist is inspiring indeed.

Try 'the prophet'-khalil Gibran. Similar yet different.

If you like a bit of dark humor...try 'Angelas Ashes' . It's a gritty bio but its funny and inspiring.

Fiction: Son of the circus- John Irving. A suspense thriller set in India. For some reason...it reminded me of 'A fine Balance' by Rohinton Mistry...maybe its the bawa characters in both.

I'm currently on The Fire From Within-Carlos Castaneda. Cannot seem to get into it though.

Yes I've heard about The Prophet, and it's on my list of "books to read"

I've also read Rohinton's "A Fine Balance" - another great book.

It's interesting to see of any of these will get made into a movie, like Memoirs of a Geisha. I read that book years back when it first came out and I thought it was so beautifully written, it has become ne of my fave books ever. The movie was good, and I thought it captured part of the beauty but not all of it. I thought the characters weren't as developed as they could have been, but then the movie would probably have been about 10 hours long! Better to read the book.

I agree. My wife and me loved that one too. I did not see the movie because I did not want to mar the impression the book left. Maybe I should place it on my 'to see' movies.

'Angelas Ashes' is already made/being made into a move. However I cannot see how it will live upto the book. There was a certain black humor in the book that is difficult to replicate effectively and yet make a good movie.

Yes certain aspects of a book can be difficult to portray on screen with the same effect.

One book which was made into a great movie (in my opinion) was The Colour Purple by Alice Walker. Another classic. I read the book when I was about 14 and decided right there and then that it was the best book I had ever read (in my short life!) I've probably seen the movie about 10 times now.

I read Blink by Malcolm Gladwell. Enjoyed it. Freakonomics was good but got a little boring at the end.

over the christmas holidays I read:
Ladies Coupe - Anita Nair. Good book recommended.
serving crazy with curry - amulya malladi - interesting

It is refreshing to see so many South Asian authors writing nowadays. They bring a different perspective and language to english writing.

Read Jeffrey Archer's latest false impression but was very disappointed.
