Hi DT,
Nice thought!
Since I have faced the same problems that you have described - I would like you to put my name in the mantee list - so that I do not have to wait or lose out atleast on this opportunity!
Chandresh
Good Idea! A mentor club is useless without the mentees
Come On Guys! I need two other CDs to step up as Mentors. This will never be a strain on your time or resources in any way.
Thanks
DT
DT, I sent U a message earlier today. Count me in as one of the two.

Dear Fellow CDs,
In the short time that I have been in Canada, I've had the privilege of meeting a lot of my Fellow CDs and have had the opportunity to talk with a lot of them regarding the job situation in Canada. From these conversations, I've recognized that most CDs currently struggling with the job market have a common pattern:
1. Resumes being sent out are not meeting with a response
2. The scarce interviews do not produce a positive result
3. Professional jobs are not always advertised online
I feel that all 3 factors can be addressed. Job Hunting in North America (particularly in Canada due to a smaller economy) is like conducting guerrilla warfare. There are few ground rules and a bag full of tricks that need to be employed (no pun intended ).
I would like to invite three other like-minded individuals to form a Mentor Club with me. We will start by analyzing the aforementioned points and any other issues, in order to formulate a strategy. Each mentor can then take 3-4 CDs under his or her wing to help resolve the issues that are preventing them from getting a decent job. If this experiment works out, I have bigger plans in mind for the future.
By devoting just 2-3 evenings a month, we can make a huge difference for our fellow CDs. I would like to start with Ontario. If you would like to join me in this experiment, please PM me.
Sincerely,
DT

This is a very commendable effort DT and i really hope you succeed in what you are trying to achieve.
Sometime back there was an similar initiative made to form mentor groups with people in different job catagory but it did not really fly well....by sensing your enthusiasm i really hope it works this time.
There are quite a few organizations already in GTA which offer job search guidance and mentor groups to new immigrants offering help in resume, networking skills etc ....the new immigrants do not need another mentor group where someone who considers himself/herself relatively more successful telling tham what to do and how to polish their resume.
I feel what a new immigrant needs is a strong circle of friends in this foriegn land with whom they can share their problems and inhibitions openly as true genuine friends not as a mentor or a teacher, someone whom one can rely on and be sure that the friend or the support group is going to be there no matter what with no time limitations.
- Mentoring process comes with an unspoken sense of obliging and being obliged. And whenever any process comes with the sense of "let me help you" ... the sense of getting true help is lost and sense of being obliged takes root in the mind of the person being helped. Such a relationship starts with much enthusiasm but fails to sustain itself over longer periods. And the last thing one should do is to put any further burden of obligations on new immigrants who already are very burdened.
If we truly want to help others (and ourselves) then those who feel they have something to offer as a "mentor"... that they form a close group of friends with those who are struggling in re-establishing themselves in career....people with whom one can can share career and even life experiences and can learn from each others perspectives. Having a support group like that is a big confidence building measure for everynew immigrant. But such a group needs more long term time commitment and involvement, time cannot be quantified into 2-3 weekends ...because true friends are to be there for whatever it takes depending on the need...and the whole process of settling down could take anywhere between few months to many years.
Such a group should have the committment to remain together for however long it takes for everyone to settle down and if it is done right, it is only natural that strong friendships are formed and they will remain close friends even after everyone has settled well. It will then be an enriching experience for everyone in that group.
Offline from CD i am a have been closely connected with a group of 7-8 immigrant families who are struggling thru job searching and settling process. In the last two years most of them have pulled thru quite well.....none of them is planning to go back and they all have a good path set for themselves in career and in life. We stay in contact regularly and discuss things regarding jobs, resumes, career , future , life in canada etc ...but it is a very freindly relationship and not a "mentor - mentee"....i have learned more from them than viseversa.
I hope other CDs also form such groups and learn from each other's perspectives. That will make a huge difference in many lives.
DT, you have great enthusiasm and I am sure you will make a differnce.
Good luck.
