By the govt's stand , i assume that you mean Indian Govt..Please do confirm.
If it is an Indian anthem, i think it is a shame. I have been singing the national anthem every working day for 6 years (7th std to 12 th std..). I said shame b'cos 99 % of the tamilian's canot understand it ( is the anthem in Hindi?- If it is not Hindi then 99.99% tamils canot understand it). Our TN govt's anthem is "Thamiz thai vazthu" and i think that it is used in all TN govt. functions.
I wonder what CD members reaction would be if they find out that most Tamils canot understand the national anthem. Who is at fault? the central govt. or the state govt.
Sidenote : Please donot convert this thread to another attack platform. I am patriotic and respect the national anthem but what is the point when it is in a language other than what my TN govt. taught me. My parents were taught Hindi (assuming that the national anthem is in Hindi), but it was at a time when Hindi was not considered as a pass mark subject at schools (which means that you could get 1 mark in hindi and still move to the next class). My parents studied in the 1955's. They also donot know the meaning of the national anthem. My mother is a tamil teacher and she knows the meaning of "Tamiz Thai Vazthu" but she does not know the meaning of the national anthem
Sidenote 2 :
Bush's Quote :
“I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English, and they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English,” Bush said.
End of Bush's Quote
TK-> Or would CD members advise that above to the non speakers of Hindi (provided the national anthem is in Hindi)?

Translation of The national anthem- Jana Gana Mana In English
Thou are the ruler of the minds of all people, dispenser of India's destiny.
The name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sind, Gujurat and Maratha. Of the Dravid and Orissa and Bengal.
It Echoes in the hills of Vindhyas and Himalayas, mingles in the music of Yamuna and Ganga and is chanted by the waves of the Indian Sea.
They pray for your blessing and sing thy praise. The salvation of all peaople is thy hand, thou dispenser of India's destiny. Victory, Victory, Victory to thee.
Credits :The Jana Gana Mana was composed by Shri Rabindranath Tagore and first sung at the Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress on December 27th, 1911. It was adopted as the National Anthem of India on 24th January, 1950 by the Constituent Assembly. The first stanza( out of five stanzas) of the song forms the National Anthem.
TK-> The first version was written in Bengali but the national anthem is in Hindi.

Dear TK saab,

Tagore never wrote a Hindi "Jana Gana Mana" so I am curious about your source of information about the statement --- "The first version was written in Bengali but the national anthem is in Hindi"

Yes, when you sing it with a Hindi accent, it sounds like Hindi ("taba shubha" instead of "tobo shubho";) but the only version that exists is the one written by Tagore --- in Bengali. No one was allowed to change a word to make a Hindi version even if the Bengali words were written in Hindi alphabets for the rest of the country. So the National Anthem that Indians sing is basically a Bengali song sung with a Hindi accent.

Having said that, many Bengali and Hindi words have similar meanings but sound different because of the accents.
