The gym does take commitment. If fitness becomes a priority things fall into place. Its much easier to incorporate into your lifestyle if both the spouses are in it together. I was always deicated to it but now my wife is into it too. She encourages me to go on when I have my *off* days. Also since my wife has gotten into it, it is much easier for me to be on a good diet. Some other things that work for us:

Heavy Carbs in the morning only (on weekends heaviest meal is breakfast)
Normal lunch
Dinner early....by 7- and low to no carbs(no bread/rice/roti) on most days.
Taper of the amount fo food as the day progresses. Dinner the lightest- always.

Protein supplement before bed. Bed atleast 2-3 hrs after dinner.

For summer weekends...Substitute cycling(outside picnics) instead of entertaining indoors.

7-8 hrs sleep. I run a mile a day and almost an hr of weight training...so I need the rest. Note: I have 2 kids. Wife gets an hr at the gym each day too. If we can do it you can ;)

Oh yes...something that the vegans may find easy to do. Sometimes for dinner I have just a generous serving of dal in a bowl....lentil curry soup I call it :)

Hi Jake,

You're quite right about having both partners on the same track when it comes to exercise, it does make it easier to keep motivated. Not sure if Hubby will join me at the gym, if I'm at the gym, someone needs to take the dog out and make dinner :D

We have a similar thing going on with regards to meals...we will have a carb with tea/coffee in the morning on weekdays. Lunch for me normally is a small portion of leftovers or something that doesn't have alot of carbs. (Today was a tuna and low fat mayo and cucumber sandwich on whole wheat bread and an orange with water.)

Dinner is our biggest meal, omitting carbs is difficult with dinner but we try to limit how many rotis, or how many spoons of rice we have. I really should start thinking about making lighter dinners, but often we both crave the richness of indian foods, and pastas (esp. me!) I do use whole wheat pasta too now. I love bbq's as it's easier to cut out the carbs altogether - you got your meat (protein) and your veges and salads.

We don't take any supplements as we don't work out as much as you do. Weekends is the hardest for me....I try not to pig out on the stuff I've deprived myself of all week, but the craving for pizza and beer gets the better of me! (I'm consolated by the fact that we buy low-carb beer - for me anyways, hubby still loves his Stella)

I do have time but just no inclination to workout. I have been able to control my diet pretty well. I have cut down on carbs and no carbs for dinner. I fill up with vegtables and if I am still hungry then fruits. I have no room for cutting my food intake. It is at minimum. I am not overweight. I am just right. However, i do have a stubborn belly fat. As per the new research for women if your waist ( at the baval) is more than 34 and for men more than 42 inches (Descrimation there too) you are more suspectible to cardiac and other health problems. I am barely 115 pounds but my waist is 34 inches so a little more fat around the waist, i am in a health danger zone.

My wife and I dont hit the gym at the same time. I'm there between 6-6.30 am(thats me :p ) and the wife is there in the evenings...after she returns from work and our family dinner. That way I handle the kids in the evening(when I sqeeze in about 20 minutes more of weights...especially if the kids step outside to play) and the wife handles the kids in the morning. Our first priority is the kids ofcourse and incase they are having a bad day(easy when you are 5 and 8 yrs)...we compromise on our fitness plans for the day.

We have been substituting beer with wine/brandy etc. Its going to be difficult in the summer though :). Sometimes we dont mind pizza and burgers either...we keep the amounts small(mostly).

Like you ,we do a lot of bbq. Less oily too!

All our carbs are mostly from whole wheat(brad/rice/khous-khous/pasta etc). We do make exceptions, especially for the kids.

You need to increase your metabolism...so you burn that fat. The only way is diet+exercise...your diet seems to be fine. Just up the cardio...walking etc.

Getting rid of body fat is tough...even for me with 33 inches only on waist( inspite of my 175 pounds). Aiming for that washboard abs look :D . Have to get my body fat down to 9% atleast for that. :(
