What's in name? I have taken my husband's last name. Don't even think about it.

If your name is a brand name like Martha Stewart or Oprah I do not think it makes sense to change it. In fact it may be better for Oprah's husband to change his last name to capitalize on the brand name:D

For professionals like dentists, doctors etc who have built their practice on the strength of their name it does not make sense to change their name. My sis is a dentist but she did not change the sign on her clinic or her letterhead although she did take my BIL's last name.

Also for some who hate their father in laws and mother in laws refuse to take their last name. i know some families of this kind incl. one in my close family network.
Sometimes, the first names of some husbands are so funny that people refuse to take those names (for eg.) i know a person who refused to take the name of Mathrabootham in her name (for your info. Mathrapootham was a well known psyciatrist who talked about sex education on TV+ the name implies Mathra+devil). In this case, (since the girl was from TN and she is supposed to take her husbands name after marriage) she did not take it and just went with the name M.Selvi (selvi is a changed name).
I suppose , if she went for taking a passport(indian) she might expand the initials of her name.
TK
Sidenote : Also many of the chinese have very difficult names that they change it on the resume etc.. And then when they take canadian passport they change to some english names instead of their original chinese name. (ex. xiabong or something like that in our office is known as Dan)

TK,

You are right, say a girl by the name of Smartha Patel marries a guy whose last name is Pant (in India it’s pronounced as Panth) so if this poor girl takes on the last name of her husband she will be called Smartha Pant. If she stays in India well and good, but if she moves to Canada and goes for an interview she will be called as Smart Pant.:p

In your community, is it common practice for a woman to tak eon her husband's FIRST name? First name and last name then?

MR,
For people who have moved to Canada from Tamil Nadu, the female has to take the First name of the husband which will be the last name for her. for (e.g) Husband's names is : Alan Smith and wife's name is Nancy Drew (before marriage), After marriage Nancy Drew will be known as Nancy Alan.
In Tamil nadu, it is not decent/norm to express the first name of the male in public (exposing last name is even more not the norm/decent/acceptable). In tamil Nadu, all registration of our characters will be : S. Alan for the Husband, D. Nancy for the lady (before mariage) and A. Nancy for the lady (after marriage)
TK
Sidenote :I have had lot of suprises in Canada (particularly Ontario on that) and confusion too in ladies taking the first name of the husband.
Sidenote 2: This applies only to Tamil Nadu , as i know. In our class (school and univ.) all the girls last name was an initial. but i have seen doctors expressing their name and the first name of the husband/father.

For what reason is it not considered decent/norm to say the first name of your husband in public??

Thanks
