Ok, so you still have ~3 months before you land.

First things first. Not everybody have a hotline connecting to this website. Most of us have fulltime jobs that sucks up all their energy and a monkey or two at home ;) After all we all are human beings. We get emotional, we become lazy, we forget.

Back to your problems. Recently we had a real good discussion over interview questions and how-to's. It's a sticky, so you'll get it.
Search thru old threads. There are few threads discussing websites for job-search.

http://workopolis.com is a good search place. Huge place.

Lot many desi's have been in your situation. They all have faced almost exactly the same problems as you.
General problem that I see is: "What's the gurantee that you WILL come to Canada in Aug-Sept timeframe? "
Any HR person will for sure ask you this monster question.
Show strong reasons for your migration. (You have a family here, right? ;) )

My suggestion, be prepared to come down for a face-to-face interview.

Next, getting into contract is easy. You might endup getting less. But hey, who cares! you need a break.

Thats why I thought by posting a sort of mini-resume, I would attract responses of a few senior CDs who could provide guidance and advise to a new immigrants in networking and job search.

Welcome to the real world !

Thank you I5a and seema..

As far as gurantees are concerned it goes like this..

After being in the US gor six years in an "Alien" status and with Green card nowhere in sight, I am determined to move. I am in the mid 30s with a family and I want to settle down. If I get an interview and a job offer , I'll move 100% even earlier than the 3-4 months .

Since I live about 8-10 hours drive from the Buffalo-Niagara border, coming down for an interview should not pose any problem.
Contracting is not a problem, since that is waht I have been doing here most of my six years. I beleive that is the way to get into the Canadian job market.

I know it is tough to get a good job in Canada immidiately, but it is equally frustrating to stay in the US , bonded to an employer in H-1B visa till you get your green card (which might take 5-7 years nowadays). And during this period, your salary is stagnant, and if you get laid off or lose your job , or the company goes bust (specially if it is a small time desi consulting company), you are done. You have to pack and leave within 10 days . At least it won't be like that in Canada.

Going back to India is easy for people who are single, but for people with families , it doesn't make sense to go to India if our children are citizens here . Why should our kids suffer the corruption, pollution and overpopulation of the third world when they are citizens of america and canada ?It is not for us, but for our kids

Seema, can you PM me some of the agents you know?

Thanks

Hey p3000g

I can tell my experience and hope it helps you.

The most important factor in settling down here in Canada is Getting a JOB!

Once I got the JOB, every other thing (banks, importing car, Driver licence, car insurance, kids school, moving stuff etc ...) was easy ... but it takes time ... so patience is a virtue!

1. I researched GTA Job Market for my Role/Skills and figured out what the market was paying for Full Time and Contracting.

I used http://www.monster.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK and http://www.workopolis.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK etc ...

2. Depending on the results from the research, I prepared my Resume.

3. Released my Resume on Job Sites (monster.ca and workopolis.ca).

When i had US residence and US telephone number on resume, I got very feeble response and for some weeks no response at all. Somehow, Canadian recrutiers thought i was not serious and some came back saying that the client is interested in LOCAL Candidates ONLY.

With that feedback, I again went back to update my resume and this time I had a local Canadian Address (use your friends canadian address) and i took Vonage's Virtual Canadian Number (pick 647/416/905 area code). Released the Canadian Resume on job sites.

So now I became a LOCAL Candidate with short term project in US and looking to move back to Canada and join my family (very important to mention the FAMILY factor).

It took me a while to master the reponse to the Question. Why do you want to come back to Canada? I believe that the recruiters/companies want to know how serious you are and if given an offer, how quickly you can join.

I was having a full-time job in US and I had a tough time keeping that up and coming every now and then for face-to-face interview in Canada.

I use to drive 10 hours one way to Canada for interview(s), i use to schedule atleast 3 interviews so that increased my chances. For some reason 90% of recruiters offerred me full-time opportunities and be prepared for atleast 3 rounds of interview each may be weeks apart. So that means frequent driving to US. I was actually driving every week or two weeks

Beleieve me! Becoming Local candidate, i was overwhelmed with a lot of job opportunities.

If you have any specific questions, i can try to answer them.
