For those job seekers who might be interested in what types of questions may occur during a personal interview, the following is a question list from one of the actual job interviews underwent by an engineering candidate in the automotive manufacturing/design field. This candidate had years of automotive mfg expr, but no design expr.

Also, this position required heavy interaction with customers, suppliers, co-workers and had direct reports.

1. What do you know about this position?
2. Why do you want this position?
3. What is your career goal in the next 5 to 15 years?
4. If offered this position, how would this position help achieve your above career goal?
5. Without design experience, how would you go about designing a product?
6. How do you know the product has been designed well?
7. Here's a real problem we are facing right now - <explains the problem and explains what is being done> Having heard what we are doing, how would you resolve this problem?
8. How do you know the problem has been resolved?
9. What do you enjoy doing most (work or personal life)?
9. What do you not enjoy doing (work or personal life)?
10. I see you are currently working on a part-time degree (could be BE, BS, MS, MBA, etc, etc). Why?
11. How will your degree help your career goal or this position?
12. What would you call as your best accomplishment (work or personal life)?
13. Give me a situation where you had to cope with a performance issue of a coworker (or a direct report) that you were unsuccessful in resolving? What would you do different on the same issue in the future?
14. Give me an example of where you were directed into different directions and how you determined and managed those priorities?
15. Give an example of a situation where you had to motivate a co-worker, client employee, peer, etc etc who was within the project team and felt not contributing enough.
16. Give an example of a meeting which you were leading that was heading in a confrontational manner. How did you react, what did you do, and what were the results?

Situation based qns are the best to figure out a candidate. Qns depend on the employer. We don’t ask qns related to personal life.

From the above list, some qns I hate and never ask:

What is your career goal in the next 5 to 15 years?
Qns about personal life
Why do you want this position?
If offered this position, how would this position help achieve your above career goal?

Agreed.

Actually, there are no q's about personal life. When situation q's are asked, the candidates are given the freedom to pick a personal life expr if they seem to struggle with a work related expr.

Also, I too hate the q's that asks about career goal in the next umpteen years. However, they still get asked by individual interviewers. Other q's I hate are "what r your strengths and weaknesses"

My firm has a structure where we use a mandatory question structure that is strictly built around "Give me an example of where you had to ...bla bla " kind of situation. Once they are asked and responses documented, the individual interviewer has then the option to ask more q's.

DIO / Dimple :
Why do you hate the above question.
Employers ask you this b'cos they can understand better where they can position you.
for eg: if you say that your weakness is getting short tempered, then the employer will decide to put you in design or other activities , where you will have no client contact.
But in a economy where getting a job is hard, people will lie left, right and centre.
for eg. if asked about the weakness, people will say that their main weakness is working too much even after office hours to do justice to a project. if the employer is a fool, then he may belive. It all depends on how desparate the person needs a job and how desparate the employer is to hire you (for want of people with experience)
Just my views and is not general. just what i know and what my friends did . so please donot get tensed or try to humiliate me. if you donot agree, say in a good language why you donot agree with me.

I think you answered your own q's.:)

That's why situation based questions tend to bring out the candidate's expr in work life that might in turn demonstrate the strengths and weaknesses.

Yet another method we use in my firm is to maintain open ended questioning to encourage descriptive responses.

Most situation based q's are open ended. Also, we ask, "What questions do you have?" rather than "Do you have any q's for me?". That way, it seems to encourages the candidate to ask questions.
