Hello CD members,
I work in a office which is of open plan and in 2 levels. My boss has a cabin (enclosed) near my desk. He and his lady partner are chain smokers. Generally they close the door and open a window in their cabin when they smoke.
For the past week, i have found that they donot care to close the door while smoking. This leads to a very strong smell. Though i am not peeved by the smell, i am of the opinion that this may cause cancer over a period of time.
(thanks 680 news advt..)
What would CD members say for this? Is there a law which says otherwise?

I am not sure about the law in Canada, but in US it is prohibited to spmoke in an office / business premises. everybody must come out of the building and smoke. whether it is a two room or a single room or a big office building.
Of course there are law breakers all over.
And yes, this might casue health problems to you over a period of time.
Talk to other colleagues and see if they are against this as well, If yes then all of you collectively prtotest ( by writing to your boss) asking them to "stop" smoking inside the building. see if it works, in worst case you can take legal help.
Hi TK Saab,
Passive smoking (Second Hand smoking) is as harmful as smoking itself, specially since the smoke that reaches you is usually from the burning end of the cigarette which in UNFILTERED.
Seriously think of doing something about it!
Hi,
The link http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/smoking/smokingbans.html could give you the smoking ban(s) in canada
Thanks guys for your inputs!
There is only and another european girl near the cabin (mezzanine level). All others are in the ground floor and the smoke does not reach them. The European girl is another preson more timid than i am. She was desparate to get this job and i donot think that she will do anything to hurt him/stop him from smoking indoors.
I am still hesitant to ask the boss directly to stop doing this. I am not afraid but i am not sure if it would be "insulting" to tell him this. Besides i am also a consultant now with the company (previously i was an employee with HRDC benifits).
Will let the board know how i will be handling this in the days to come. First i shall go through all the links given to me and i shall also google to find out more.

TK,
Why don't you just close the door (as you don't want to tell him directly), whenever your boss smoke without closing the door. This will also signal him that you are not liking the smoking in the office.

Ash20,
i am in an open office. I donot have a cabin but stay just outside his cabin. So when he leaves the Cabin door open the smoke comes out to me . I suspect that he leave the cabin door open to spy on me if i use the internet. He saw me twice on saturday using the internet. i am the only one outside his cabin and if he comes out he can see what i do on the computer. If the door is closed , i will roll down the internet once i hear him turning the door open.
