Hello,
I have recently signed a contract job for 3 months. I am expected to start work from 24th May. Meanwhile, there is a possibility of getting another permanent job.
What can happen if I decide not to start working on the contract which I have already signed. Officially, anyways I have to give them 2 weeks notice to treminate the contract. But I was wondering what is the point starting work and giving notice on first working day.
Anyone who had similar experiences can please advice.
Regards
When you signed the 3 month contract, did you keep a copy for yourself. Did you see the fine prints and the conditions in it?
Does it say anything about termination terms. If it doesnot, then i would recommend you to start working on the contract job and then if the permanent jobs comes then give the required notice.
In Canada , please show no emotion as people here also donot show any emotion. It is the survival of the fittest here. As my former American boss used to say " There is no mercy in business".
All the best in your contract job as well as the permanent job.

Sidenote : One of my friends signed a contact for 12 months. fortunately there were no termination clauses. after 3 months , the friends decided to move to a permanent job. The chinese owner of the contract, threatened legal action against the friend. The friend came over to me and showed me the contract. I told him that there were no termination clauses. So i told him not to worry. We both went to the chinese contract owner and told him the absence of the clause. He agreed then not to sue my friend but begged him to stay with the same co.. He then told us that he will get for my friend the exact terms as the permanent job company in the present co.. I told my friend to refuse and he refused. My friend then gave 2 weeks notice and quit the company.

hello Tk,
The contract required 10 working days notice period
cheers
In the event of getting the permanent job, can you ask them for 10 business days period waiting time before you join them? If so, join the current contract company. Please read the contract a 1000 times again. If there is some loophole in the contract that slips your eyes, then they can sue you.

Are you there?
Bluelobster,

Its very likely that the guy interviewed other people and has someone else in the pipeline if you say no. Of course, it projects him in bad light in front of the client. And you're giving him VERY short notice. But these guys work with stuff like this on an on-going basis. It will look REALLY bad on his behalf (and he'll probably take a financial hit too) if you work for 10 days and then leave.
If I were you, I'd call him at the earliest (like over the weekend) and inform him of the change in situation. And guage his reaction. This way, he can go into his contingency mode and find someone else fast.
Having said that, everybody is different. Some recruiters will understand a situation like this and although they'll be pissed, they will accomodate not to burn bridges. Others may take a more drastic approach.
Tough choices but you have to do what's right for your career.
