hi,
i did read some of the threads on driving license. i am confused so if someone can clarify it will be of great help.
we landed a week ago.
Case1: my husband got a driving license in india 9 months ago. is he allowed to take the first level test? is he supposed to drive with someone next to him even after passing the test with someone who has 4 years canadian driving experience? he does not have an international driving license. does it help to have one?

Case2:i got a license 9 years ago which is valid for another 6 years in india. am i eligible for the first and second level? am i supposed to right to the someone in india to help me validate the license?

i know i have too many questions, but it will be of great help if u can clear the queries. thanks in advance.

I am assuming you are talking about Ontario.

You have to get G1 license (similar to learner's license in India) which is written examination before you get G2 or G. If you get G2/G, you can drive alone.

Waiting time after G1 is 12 months (or 8 months if you go for driver training certificate) before you get your G2.

Waiting time after G2 is 12 months before you get your G.

You can get your licenses validated from either Indian High Commission http://www.cgitoronto.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK or the other way given in the driving forum on canadiandesi.ca (approaching somebody in India who would give you a driving experience certificate). High Comission takes couple of months to do that because paperwork is sent to the office which issued the license.

Getting validated driver's license would reduce your wait time. You have more than 2 year's experience, so you do not have to wait for appearing for G (if you get the experience certificate). Your husband will have to wait 3 months for G2 (or none if he goes for driving training certificate and gets experience certificate from India).

International license will only help for first 3 (or 4?) months in Ontario.

You won't necessarily have to wait 12 months for your 'G' license.....

Hi

Welcome here!

You already have the links, well to answer your questions.

Your husband will have to get a G1 license first (like a learner's license in India). Its a test of traffic, road and safety rules- its administered on a computer or one can choose to write it as a pen and paper test. You can buy the prescribed book from one of the testing centres. When he gets his G1, he would need to have a person who has a G license, with him while he drives- till he gets a G2 license, whereafter he can drive on his own. He might like to join an accredited driving school- the certificate they give will help in lowering (marginally) the insurance premium- also he can go for a G2 license quicker, 8 months instead of the usual 12.

In your case, as you have a license which is more than 4 years old and is still valid- you can choose to go directly for a G or G2 road test. A G road test; tests your driving on both city streets and highways- while a G2 road test is done within the city.

A person with a G2 can also drive on highways- and the restrictions are very minor- like having to restrict passengers to the number of working seat belts, and (i think) having a zero alcohol level while driving, etc.

However as you are eligible, I would suggest you take a few lessons with a driving school, and go for a G road test straightaway (take the same car you practised on for the test) if you clear that, great! If not, then go for a G2.

As regards authetication of licenses from India- from what i have seen, some representatives do ask for it- while some dont. I went to the license office near Victoria; one representative asked a person to get his license authenticated, while the representative who attended to me didnt. Its getting more common these days as i read on this site. Hope you get by.

Good luck with the G license- just think how much fun its going to be when you get your G license- You can then can sit in with your husband and tell him how bad his driving is :)

Try and get the licenses before you start working- after that you will get quite busy.

All the best, for the licenses and life ahead.

Some clarification on what soberflier stated

Level 2 of graduated licensing.
Holders may drive Class G vehicles without accompanying driver but are subject to certain conditions.

Effective September 1, 2005:

* The number of young passengers that teen G2 drivers can carry will be limited from midnight to 5 a.m.
* Initially, G2 drivers 19 or under can carry only one passenger aged 19 or under.
* After the first six months, and until the G2 driver earns a full G licence or turns 20, they can carry only three passengers aged 19 or under.

Thanks Anand. Nice find!

Sunflower, as long as you and your husband arent teens under 20, things should'nt be too bad with a G2 either! :)

Please visit other threads on this topic. Your indian license no longer needs verification....just an undertaking from the holder about its authenticity.
