Hi!
Can i ask you as to why you are interested in becoming an associate member of this association? Have you done proper research as to the benifits of being an associate member of this association.
Let me give you an example in the field of architecture alone (only this field, I am not commenting on any other field.)
My boss is a member of this organisation. He is just educated as a draftsman. With this membership he has a stamp which he used to stamp drawings. Now OAA has introduced legislation that we have to write some exams for building code to sign drawings. Now my boss never uses his stamp.
So research of what use will it be. Will employers recogonise this association in Canada. Will it bring the kind of salary that you expect from Canada?

hi TK saab
OACETT does have some recognition.. I have seen some advertisements in the paper which specially mentions OACETT's name..and they want people who are certified by OACETT
And, even if there is no benefit for jobs, there surely is a benefit when getting insurance for ur cars...

Thanks for the reply. I think that the poster is an electrical engineer by profession. so any views of elctrical engineers with OACETT's registration would be appriciated. If he wants to get enlisted, then all the instructions registration is in the website.

TK, membership with a professional body in your field acknowledges your interest in professional development- associates gain from insights of long term members. Such bodies also award people for professional excellence, set standards for its members, regulate conduct of members of its profession, liase with employers, often have ethics committees, conduct public awareness programs for the profession- besides allowing members access to field specific information, career opportunities, networking and lobbying to the government on issues affecting the field.

And yes, mostly professionals with industry experience at a higher tier of like professional association member levels do tend to draw more remuneration.

So in short, thats what professional bodies exist for- and in Canada, they play an even more crucial role in assisting to integrate professionals with foreign credentials into the field with mentorship/ apprenticeship programs.

While the above might be hard to comprehend, nevertheless moving on to straight facts--MAK1 wanted to seek an opinion of someone who WAS/ IS a member- I take it that you are NOT one, and neither are you from the field either. And i am sure, he didnt need you to tell him that he can look things up on their website.

Secondly, another member replied to this post- and you cut him down quite rudely, for replying in your POST # 2. Going by your own logic, TK, you shouldnt have either.

TK-Your boss/ your office/ your views/ your experiences/ your wisdom/ your actions/ your cost savings/ you yourself may always not be appropriate examples/ answers for everything on this board.

Cheers

Hi!
I just gave him my VIEW and my profession example. I clearly mentioned that.
If other members have any other experience, please post that and the poster will make his own views. Every coin has two sides and i gave him my view of it. I am a BCIN member (which replaces and is equivalent to OACETT- for the profesion of designing only) and i think i am justified in giving him my opinion- (in the field of architecture/ design).
I took the BCIN exam only to satisfy the whims of my boss. I donot sign any drawings ('cos if i make a mistake, then a lawsuit will have my head). neither do i use BCIN exam knowledge in my work. It was an open book exam and it is a waste that an architect from india would have to really go through that .
As said these are just my views .
The poster never mentioned his profession. I know him personally and hence knew that he was an electrical engineer. Technologists and Technicians means Diploma engineers and ITI respectively in Canada. Would an electical engineer gain in this membership or the PEO , which is there specifically for engineers? Anyway , this is for the poster to decide and is only my view.
TK
