IMO, we should not compare. Each actor/actress/singer is different.
On a side note, some of AR's tunes are the same as his guru Iliyaraja.

Folks dont freak out..I know I am reviving an old thread on Rajinikanth but I could not restrain.....Check this out ...

http://www.ibnlive.com/news/rajnikanth-rules-at-rs-15-cr-a-film/13623-8.html

He is the second highest paid actor (Rs 15 Cr) in the whole of South Asia next only to Jackie Chan , more than the earnings of Aamir, shahrukh and Hrithik put together...more than AB..his last movie grossed over Rs 70 crore!!!

I am not a Rajini fan but I am astonished and from a bus conductor to where...really inspirational.

Illayaraja, ARR were geniuses

Are they dead now?

Quote:

I have heard of RDB/SDB songs while i was young and growing up. There are just like any other songs by Bappai Lahari, deva, Gangai Amaran etc... Maybe RDB/SDB can be compared to Vishwanathan (though i even doubt if they will come up to MSV's Standard).Illayaraja, ARR were geniuses. So you can not compare sand to rock.
Why i said that our mastero was of lower caste was that to tell the reality of his birth. He had a poor life and was not educated. His music was the gift of God to him and it did not come to him by learning.
Other Tamils in this board can shed some more light on this.
And this is just my view. You are free to agree with it or disagree with it.
TK

TK why you pushing it in to Tamil Vs Hindi, and why you need attestation on your thoughts from shankaracharya?
I am hindu thou i can still shed light on Illayaraja and A R Rehman, i love their music. I dont understand tamil but still i used to listen their songs cuz of gr8 music and composition, and i also like RD Burman and SD burman they were the maestro, best of the best of their time n even now, unmatchable.
Why the hell you,ve to compare them and that too on the basis of nativeness?
Grow up

I do not want to get into this discussion as it like the perrenial question \\\\\\\"which came first the chicken or the egg\\\\\\\".

Everybody has a different taste and we as individual change our preferences as we grow older.

In my family my Grand Dad used to like K.L.Saigal, while my dad used to like Mohammad Rafi while my taste is still not set and keeps changing while my first daughter like Frou Frou and the second one like Kelly Clarkson.

Film music is one part but mastery/usage of classical music of Hindustani, Carnatic, Western classical, Baroque music, folk music, world music to current Rap/Hip-Hop would be considered to the full mastery in film music. Can anybody beat the classical usage in Umrao Jaan or even some sections of Ismail Darbar in Devdas/HDDM or his Sanjay Leela songs.

I can refer to the views of a master on this subject, who views will be more meaningful to this discussion:

Guitar Prasanna.

http://www.guitarprasanna.com/

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guitar_Prasanna

In 1985, he formed a band called Dispersions and joined The Eleventh Commandment, a rock band in South India.

He also gained contacts with several Indian cinema composers, including Ilayaraaja and A. R. Rahman. The first filmi music that he played is for the song \\\\\\\"July Matham\\\\\\\" (Tamil) from the movie Puthiya Mugam. :) He has a lot of respect for Ilayaraja, whom he considers to be a phenomenon.:)

In 1992, after graduating from IIT, he took up a software engineering position in Complete Business Solutions, India. In 1993 he quit this job to go to the Berklee College of Music.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"
