Second, people forget that most European countries made their riches by colonizing countries in Africa, Asia and S. America. They skimmed the resources and collected taxes from the people living in those countries. ....

So the next time you talk about those sewing machines with wheels, think about what they have done to the people of the world.

There can be two sides to your statement. While I agree with what European nations have done to the other parts of world, think of "Sewing Machine" as a part of invention, not a part of industrialisation.

Most of the inventions/discoveries were done in Europe during the reneissance period (correct me if I am wrong about reneissance). The whole awakening - scientific and philosphical/social - revolt against church and establishment - started in Europe. Yes - it can be argued that same could have been the case in India or any other country, if they were not supressed. But still, you cannot rule out the contribution of European society to the modern world.

You are right Meghal many inventions are credited to the renaisance period in europe.

But is Europe more friendly to outsiders than N.America?Which has higher tolerance levels as far as non natives are concerned?

I think I sent the same msg as a pm to meghal by mistake...sorry for that meghal :p

In the past 50 yrs or less, Europe was liberal in its immigration policies. The scandinavians being amongst the most liberal. However, be it France or Sweden, attitudes are changing.

I dont think you can club Canada and the US (and mexico...technically NA but I know thats not what you meant) together when it comes to tolerance for outsiders.

I would say Canada is more tolerant than the US in this regard even if only out of necessity.

As somebody by BV in his posting, each country in Europe has its own culture, while US/Canada is an amalgamation of various cultures. So going by logic, NA should be more tolerant compared to Europe.

However, except for Native Americans, all Americans-Canadians are still outsiders. So an ideal situations would be comparing the tolerance levels of Europeans v/s tolerance level of Native Indians. However, such comparison is irrelevant, as perhaps immigration was something that was forced upon Native Indians.
