I heard it over on the talk radio that BELL SYMPATICO has changed its policy and will be secretly keeping track of your internet activity. This could have a disastrous consequence that this information can be passed onto the government agencies if required.

Is is true ?.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"

Don't see how that is a problem unless you actually ARE a terrorist and engage in any illegal activities. Granted that I don't like people snooping in my personal stuff (the Govt. least of all) but in the dangerous world we live in today, we have to sacrifice some personal freedom to gain more security. Ofcourse before you know it, the privacy watchdogs will be all over this one and what we'll actually get is a watered down policy to keep track of "certain suspicious activity", not all.

Hey, this may actually benefit this site :D

 ?
 ??

Still  ???

:(

Allright, I am referring to the BooHoo Brigade and members of the "Angrezon Canada Choro" movement :p

The power of google..............

Even if this was to come to fruition, still wondering why it should be of concern to anyone who’s on the ‘straight and narrow’.

While I have nothing to hide, I still do not like this law. Here is why.

We live in a society where we are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty. This legislation gives the authorities the right to snoop on your emails, and surfing habits without a warrant. Let me explain the problem with an example.

Just the other day, I heard on the news that bomb making info was easily available on the net. So I had to see how easy it was. Like any research, I read a few articles, I went to a few sites and developed an opinion on the subject matter.

Even if the authorities are snooping right now, they cannot use this information against me in a court of law. Or they could get a warrant to legally collect evidence. To get a warrant, they have to convince a judge with other evidence that snooping on me is the only way to prosecute. That right there is the counter balance to a police state!

With the new legislation, I would be in trouble. The burden of proof would now be on me to prove that I was just doing research for research's sake.

For those who are interested....

You can hide your identity from snoopers of any kind by using a proxy server.

Replace the http://www.xyz.com with the site of your choice.

In relation to your example, I can’t imagine that your researching publicly available information on bomb making, in isolation, would lead to your being prosecuted. If on the other hand, you were to follow that up with contact with a vendor to purchase a large quantity of ammonium nitrate for no other apparent purpose, that would be a different story.

I also don’t believe we are getting to a position like in the States, where Bell Sympatico is going to go ahead and submit a large amount of information on sites visited by every user. Far more likely that intelligence agencies would request information on specific individuals. So if you were to go around posting hate messages on a board or expressing an intent to commit violent acts, you could ‘probably’ expect some attention, where in the past, it may have been difficult for law enforcement to get a warrant.

Oh... once you remove the safeguard, there is no stopping how far or how much information can be collected.

For now, we are in a low state of aggitation and it is safe to assume they will collect info on specific individuals. However, this legislation is forever. It takes only one act of terrorism (any time in the future) and you can bet that vast amounts of information will be collected.
