One of my colleagues is given ride from northern suburb to Toronto. He is being charged $1 less than what he would spend if he would use a transit per day.
It is a matter of personal choice and ethics, but just curious how much would you charge a person if you were offering him/her a ride everyday? Since you are already driving through that way, you are not going out of your way just for the sake of that person. In that case, is it worth to charge a complete fare rather than charging nominal fee for whatever inconvenience you have to face for having a second person in your car?
I believe in this guys case, the person who is offering the ride is paying off his gas bill and still making the profit.

Even though they are both going to the same destination, I think the person who is being given the ride should offer to pay an amount towards the cost of gas - it's a polite gesture, after all, this person is not his personal driver. Whether the driver wants to accept the money is his choice.

Meghal,
It is all a matter of personal choice and in the environment that the ride giver was brought up. It also depends on who asks for the ride : Did the ride taker ask to be picked up from his residence and dropped off after work or did the ride giver tell the ride taker that he will pick him up and drop him back. In the former, the ride taker has to come to some financial compensation to the ride giver where as in the later case an occasional treat will suffice.
For eg. i give return rides for 2 desi employees in my office (18 km one way) and i charge them nothing but then i was the one who offered to drop them. While i had no car, an Iranian from my office offered me to drop me midway between my office and home after work. I took his offer but did not talk about financial compensation. I hoped that my talk to him during the drive about office politics would be compensation enough. Though he is not in my office now, we do speak ocassionally over phone/ internet. Also while working at factories, many sri lankan's/ an indonesian used to drop me midway between factory and home. It is prevalant among Gora's to take money for rides but not so prevalaent among south asian people to take money for rides given or asked for, provided the ride giver does not have to deviate much from him original route to help the ride taker.
OTOH, I know a desi who offers rides to his desi collegues at work for $2 a one way ride from mississauga to burlington.

I will drop for free a Co-op student, but a regular employee i will expect him to share the cost of gas.

You know you are a desi when ........ You spew forth the virtues of India, but don't want to live there...............You've never had a tanning salon membership
I have seen plenty of people (including Indians) taking money for ride in factories. For some it is like a side income. They would drop 2-3 people and charge them $20 a week each. Works especially well in areas like Malton and some pockets in Brampton, where there a quite a few people working in the same factory.
Giving free ride (daily) would be a generosity/help but not everyone is generous.
OTOH, the co-op student in the above case is also saving money and time.
