I am in a dilemma to choose a place for short term stay immediately upon arriving. I searched craigslist and sent email for the below two guest houses:
1) http://www.darryhouse.net/dh/index.htm
2) http://www.torontorooms4u.com/reservation.php
Can any one please give your feedback on these two places? I could not find any place where the rent is less than $25 a day.
I am single and arriving on 30th july in Toronto. Need at least a sharing accommodation to start with.
Hi!
Check CD Classifieds.
A single room w/ sharing everything in a house will cost you around $350-400 a month.
A basement apartment will cost you around $650 (4075, old dundas street, Toronto) to $750.
If you have enough time to fix up with the advertiser in CD, then he can pick you from the airport to his room. Otherwise, go to these guest houses for 1 or 2 days and then from there call the CD advertisers, fix up a place and ask the owner to take you to his place from the guest house that you will be staying. The advantage in checking into these guset houses will be that it will be filled with recent immigrants who have been there for around a month and these people can educate you regarding how to survive in Toronto as well as regarding the running of the town like Transit, cheap food, free maps, free job search services, opening of bank acount, SIN card etc.. Besides if these guest houses are equiped with internet, it will be even more good for you. These people in the guest houses will also give you company while you move around for these services. The problem with checking into a shared accomodation in to a house is that the owner will not find time to educate you on Toronto since he himself will have to work, lead a family life etc... Some of the ohouse owners canot fit themselves into a new immigrant's shoes.
All the best and Happy landing/ immigration.
Note that in Gurudhuwara's in the GTA , food (Langer) is free. Also some Gurudhuwara's can offer you free accomodation for some days.
Please note that there will be no help given/ information kiosk at the Airport. You will have to be pretty much on your own if you land at Pearson Airport. So be prepared for that. There will be money changers, phone card sellers at the airport. Also if you go to the departure lounge (above arrival) you maybe able to buy some food / snacks to eat. Go for the one known as Tim Hortons. The price is really good and there are vegetarian items too for sale.
