Hi,
I am an Accountant from past 10 yrs. From past 5 years I am working in the Middle East i.e. Dubai. I have done my graduation & Diploma Business Mngt in India. Now that I have got a immigration visa for Canada. But I am really worried on how are the scopes of getting a job for an Accountant in Canada. Will my experience help me over there ? Do I have to study further in Canada and if yes than which course is useful for me to do over there.
Pls advise me. I am planning to migrate in Feb/Mar 2007.
An accountant has the skills but needs to upgrade in the local market.
Depending on your work background you might want to go into Financial Analysis or Core Accounting, Treasury management, Equity etc.
Here is what I did.
a. Never underestimate the importance of the resume. Go over few books, make 30 -40 different times if need be. Have someone look over it. May be have it made by a professional.Spend atleast 100 hrs doing it. WIthout that nobody calls you. A good resume gets your foot in the door.
b. GO to workopolis, monster etc and see the different kinds of job headings, job descriptions, they are generally typical. An accountant has certain responsibilities, an anylyst has different. Many times in trying to show great experience we build it all into one resume. You might want to lay more stress on the type of job you are applying.
c. Enroll for CGA, CPA etc depending on what you are comfortable with. However you will need your transcripts ready, so before you land get them ready. or you waste 2-03 months trying to get them.
d. Do not register blindly on the net for all agencies. Apply for specific jobs and do follow up on them.
e. See and read the articles on Workopolils , monster as to the typical questions asked in an interivew , how to answer, what to wear. The more you read these the more you will get a feel of these.
Generally you might need to temp initially till you get a permenant job of your liking.
ANy more questions, pl email on this forum.
Regards
Rajiv
