I have recently arrived and would like to share my experience with Uncle Pritam whose reference I gathered from Canadiandesi.com .

From India it is quite warming to feel that there s a person ready to pick you up from the Airport and provide you a place to stay .But please be aware that you will be charged good for sub standard services and fail to get value for money paid .

You pay $500/- to stay in a dingy basement room sharing the room with 2-3 others on bunk beds and unhygeinic conditions which also prevail in the wash room and kitchen . Only advantage is that you get Indian food once a day and have the company of new 'trapped' Immigrants who are also searching for a new alternative.

You are better off at Sunny Newcomer Services (www.sunnynewcomer.com) or Barry House (www.barryhouse.net) which provide you much more better facilities (private roomsand all ) at similar prices . I felt cheated at Uncle Pritams after staying here.

For those who are about to arrive and are looking for a place to stay at initially for a week or a month please try the following links , communicate with them from India and then decide yourself .

I would urge fellow desis also to put forth some more links so as to help newcomers as I faced this problem and I did not find a lot of references .

Hi there ,

My initial findings suggest that the prevailing rate for a private bedroom is $25-$30 per day exclusive of food . Or likewise it could be $500 - $600 for a month . For families staying in a room it should be little higher.

In this amount u can get free - kitchen facilities , high speed internet , telephone for local calls , washer and dryer and of course clean linen and living facilities . There s no need to share your room with anyone and dont be conned if someone takes it granted .

Fido.

PS : Live in Down Town ... Transportion is cheaper , better and u r close to all amenities . Mississauga is 1- 1.5 hours away.

Fido,

I absolutely agree with you, I had a similar experience with one Gujju family
living in scarborugh, where I had stayed for a week with my family. I was intially tols that there is no other guests there , and when I landed there was about 15 of them. Within a week I had enough and managed to rent an apartment , at a reasonable rate. In the end they had charged me 500 dollars for a week's stay. New comers please don't get in to the trap in the eagerness
to stay with Indian families and help for pick up , SIN card, PR card etc. What I found is that the things are extremely transparent in Canada, It is very easy to move around, find locations, and 2 out of 5 are Desis anyway to seek help

I did lot of search to find a place to stay with some indian. Then I found it may not be necessary. Finally, I landed in a guest house with $28 per day. It was okay with me as I had decided to stay just for a week, with discounts, it came to $180 for a week. It is in Scarborough, near Agin court mall. It is basically a 3 bedroom apartment, each room is independent and clean, operated by a chinese couple. No troubles, no disturbance, a good well furnished kitchen, you can cook anything you like.
I got an Indian friend within a week and moved to his apartment on sharing basis.
So, I suggest, you not to worry too much on initial stay, as you are bound to spend some thing like $180 for a worry-free stay.

Hi Fido,

I have similar experience staying with a Gujju with the name (Moderator's note : Please do not use people's names. If someone wants those details they can either email or PM you) He committed the following;

1. Rent for 4 people : $275

2. Food cost : $250 (breakfast, lunch and dinner)

5% discount + Free airport pick up + TV + Swimming pool + Phone + free personal assisatance as new comers

I wrote him atleast 4 emails giving him the complete details of my arrival and he agreed for everything. However when I landed he was not there, his mobile was switched off and then his wife said that he doesn't know which terminal the flight arrives ! I think one can get complete information about the flight from help desk of the airport.

1. So he didn't turn up for pick up !
2. No 5% discount
3. TV was in his drawing room, so he watch with everyone else
4. Swimming pool was dirty and was not in use.
5. And on our arrival his wife declared only lunch or breakfast will be served.
6. You pay misc. charges $25 for keeping my SIN/PR card
7. Add 15% as tax on all.
8. The only assisstance he provided is that on request he dropped us a Square Mall. Of course, he used to give all information about how to reach a place by bus!

So guys be careful with these "VERY SMART?" guys.

Cheers

thanks,

I also stayed at the same place when I landed here in August 2004. I took the big family room with attached washroom and it was really nice stay to begin with in Canada. I stayed for full August month and adjusted myself to new beginning in Canada with my family with a very positive mindset. We had very good time and comfortable stay in Jessica guest house.
