hi cd members

i have been here one year now and have landed a new job now

that needs extensive travelling by car

sometimes around 600 km per day

what kind of a car would any expert suggest

that would stand the wear and tear and would

not be harsh on the pocket

is second hand a good option

lease is out of question as would be expensive for me

pls advise

SAFETY FIRST, PETROL CONSUMPTION SECOND. Is it 600 KM per day ?.

I know a gujarati sales guy who does 100K every year and he buys only TOYOTA CAMRY.

As you are going to be on the road a long time do not compromise on the safety part. Look at some american cars also like CHEVROLET Impala, Malibu with V 6 engines.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"

To continue to this thread ........
I am in the market for a American car for less than $5000 and greater than 2000 models.
Based on The Star and Kijiji, I find that there are lots of Neon's, Dodge, impala,Crysler, Sunfire, Chevy etc.... for the requirements...
I am requesting CD's to inform me with their experience as which of these cars are the best among the lot. Which is the most reliable?
To me, I am finding it skeptical to buy any other American car except Ford. But I canot find a Ford with this rate requirement.
Thanks
TK A

Regarding ford--

I bought a Ford SUV after a using a Honda for 6 years.

In the 2 years that I had it (before coming to Canada), the Ford went to the dealer for repairs more often than did the Honda in all the 6 years that I owned it.

The Ford had small irritants - window actuator packed up and had to be replaced twice, air con valve had to be replaced, etc etc. True, the issues were minor - but they entailed driving to the dealer, leaving the car for the day and picking it up in the evening - quite a pain.

The family and I believe that ford lives up to its name -Fix or repair daily. The Honda, on the other hand, was a dream with no problems at all. As far as we are all concerned, Japanese cars win hands down.

As said before, I am in the market to buy a car. I prefer Japanese but Japanese models are quite costly and hence I am settling for an American one.
Does any one have any idea is this is a good deal?
Ford (Focus) 2002 model. SE ( 4 door sedan)
115K kms. on it. Second owner. Lady driven. Tires just changed recently for $600 (so they claim)
They are asking for a final price of $6200 (with safety and emission by them). The picture look good and they claim that the car is accident free (which I will check by Carfax). The pain is that I will have to drive to Kitchener to test drive this car as the seller is located there.
Any idea as to if Ford SE is a good car? ANy history of problems in it.
In case, the deal does not go through, how are the other cars that I have shortlisted ?
Neon (Crysler)
Pontiac Sunfire
Pontiac Impala

Thanks
