Hi to all the desis in Calgary reading this message:
I am a new immigrant and currently residing in Toronto. I landed here in May and have been looking for jobs and pretty confident that I should land into one in a few weeks.
While this arrangement is in place, given the numerous articles and media flashes on moving to Calgary seem to be hitting my eyes everytime I set on the newspaper, internet or TV, I am constantly getting tempted into knowing more about the city should I decide to move in there.
I have also contacted Accountemps (an Accounting rec agency) there and have tried to get a feel of how the job market is like and I am pleased to say that I got quite a positive outlook on it.
I do understand that this website, through a lot of good effort by our folks, has countless articles and commentaries that do shed light on living in Calgary and I have tried to read through some of them and I am still quite parched on the info I'm looking out for and I feel it is only through networking that we can know more.
May I ask any desi living in Calgary to be able to speak to me on phone, if he/she does not mind? I will make the call, just let me know when and what your number is and that would help me a great deal. Nothing much, just a casual chat on knowing what it is like living in Calgary.
Just drop me an e-mail @ and let me get back.
Hope you have a great day and thank you for your time.
Always,
Me2Canada

No Doubt, whole Alberta is doing well from last 7-8 yrs. But from last few weeks oil price is going down that may impact AB economy if it sticks for long time like that.
I personally suggest that if you are in job don’t move anywhere without job. If without job and you feel like you can make it so before moving make sure you have few interviews in pipe line.
AB is doing well but there are lot of people still working in labor job here and that is different story that they are making $11/hr in that also.
Where are you from??
No I certainly don't have any interview lined up, if you are from Calgary, may we talk??
The economy I hear will do well irrespective of what happens to the gas prices given that a lot of investment has been infused into the economy. Yes it has been doing well for the 7-8 yrs but not as much as it is now, have you checked out the growth rates? They are phenomenal. I believe the mayor doesn't have money to fund infrstructure projects (around $850 million!) because there are not many taxpayers that could generate such a sum in so much time. Anyway, that is a different issue. But for a a guy like me, single in Toronto, without a job, what could be the pluses in Calgary that I should explore and that I know nothing of.

Well I have travelled coast to coast and seen a lot of the major cities in canada. In my opnion Vancouver is a great place to live however employment can become an issue there. Toronto can become an ugly place if one decides to settle down in the "wrong" area. However Toronto is a great place to live as well and employment seems to be easier especially for new immigrants. Thats if you are just looking to put a roof over your head and food in your tummy and arent too picky until you can make sense of this whole show.
Good luck
