Hello Everyone and welcome to the first communication of the Toronto Chapter of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India.
I am Himanshu Shah, Chairman of the Toronto Chapter.
Introduction
First, let me Congratulate and offer my sincere thanks to all of you for your support in getting the first North American Chapter of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (Institute) in Toronto. I am truly honored to be the first Chairman.
It was a pleasure to see over 75 members at the inaugural meeting on Aug 24 and we are planning another event around November (see details below) and expect to see many more of you then. I have been in touch with the Institute since and an announcement on the formation of the Chapter has been made on the Institute's web site ( http://www.icai.org/icairoot/announcements/announ733.html ) and will also be in made in the upcoming issue of the Institute's magazine Chartered Accountant. The president of the Institute is also desirous of meeting with the members and is expected to come to Toronto in the near future.
Currently we have about 150 members in our contact database, who have expressed and interest in joining the Chapter and would like to see that number increase substantially. Since many of you could not make it to the meeting on Aug 24, let me recap the objectives of the chapter and also introduce the members of the managing committee and advisory committee.
Chapter objectives
The Institute has guidelines relating to the functioning of a Chapter outside India and based on that, the objective of the Toronto Chapter is primarily to provide an opportunity for our members to network with each other. A supplementary goal will always be to liaise, within the guidelines of the Institute, with the professional bodies in Canada ( e.g. Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA), Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario (ICAO) and others) to increase and enhance the awareness of our members to eventually get recognition and reciprocity. We will also strive to support and provide guidance to our members who want to complete their Canadian CA. To that end, we have formed various subcommittees comprising of the members of the managing and advisory committee.
Managing & advisory committee
The functioning of the Chapter will be through a managing committee which will comprise of a minimum of 8 members. Currently we have 11 members on the managing committee comprising of members from both the industry and the professional firms. We also have an advisory committee of 6 members, comprising of senior members from the industry. The managing committee meets once every month and the advisory committee members have the option to attend these meeting if they desire. The members of these committees are:

Chapter member-ship
Any member of the Institute who wishes to be a member of the Toronto Chapter is welcome to join. The committee has agreed that the annual membership fees for the Chapter will be $100. Please contact us by sending a reply to this message.
Chapter activities
As stated above, the primary objective of the Chapter is to provide a forum for networking amongst our members and to that end we will try and organize 6 - 8 professional development and 1 – 2 social activities each year. There will be a small charge to attend these events.
We are also in the process of setting up the legal structure for the chapter and opening of a bank account.
Also, an annual event is planned for next year, where we will invite the president of the Institute to come and meet with us.
We want to set-up a web site for the Chapter and any volunteers will be appreciated.
November networking event
A social networking event is planned for the evening of either Friday, November 10, 2006 or Friday, November 17 where the members and their spouse or significant other will meet over dinner and entertainment. Please reply and confirm before October 27, 2006 that you will be attending the event, as it will help us in planning and reducing the cost per head. The more of us who attend the lower will be the cost.
If you have any comments, suggestions with respect to any activities or this communication please do let us know. Also, please spread the word amongst your friends who are members of the Institute and invite them to join the Chapter.
Thank you all for the patience in reading this rather long message, I promise to be short in the future.
Please come and support your Chapter.
Take care,
Himanshu
