"After a judge convicted him of sexually abusing a 15-year-old student, teacher Malcolm Watson was offered two punishment options: an American jail cell or exile to Canada. Mr. Watson chose Canada."
What does this mean?
US cannot just dump their sexual offenders into our country. we should lock this guy in jail. what if he goes after girls in canada?

India Canada Bhai-Bhai
There is more to it then just those few sensational sentences, this pervert (35 year old school teacher) has a wife who is a Canadian citizen and lives with his children in Ontario. So is Canada angry about it..of course it is, even the US media is angry. Plus other factors that have complicated the case was that this was a willing relationship but because the girl is a minor at 15 (below 16) he is considered a sexual offender.
The US judge had not taken the views of the Canadian authorities into consideration before making his verdict. So technically the verdict may not be any good and he could end up in jail.

It is a crazy world out there
But the underlying question still remains - does the Judge have authority to pass such a sentence? Is the Judge so 'naive' that he doesnt know his jurisdiction? If thats the case then the judge should be liable for a larger punishment then the culprit.....
I think there are some missing pieces in this puzzle and we know only what the media wants us to know - unless the judge is truly out of his mind.
Hiren
Wow !,
He will complete 1095 days and can file for Canadian citizenship. It is a win-win situation, where he can go back to his job in US and at the same time avail of the healthcare in Canada.
Oh! Canada....................

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....
"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"
Now the response from Canada

Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty lashed out at the decision Tuesday and called for the Canadian federal government to intervene, the Globe and Mail reported.
"We will work with the federal government and we hope we are of one mind in this regard to ensure that we don't become some kind of a dumping ground for convicted offenders south of the border," he said.
Canada's Immigration Minister Monte Solberg has not indicated what action, if any, the federal government will take, the CBC said.

A Proud Indian Canadian
More updates. Good to see that the Canadian government has taken this seriously and come out with a strong statement.
