Staff Reporter

Donates 100 Hyundai Accent cars

Vehicles will enhance efficiency of force
Will be evenly distributed to L&O zones, traffic wing

CHENNAI : Korean carmaker Hyundai Motors India presented 100 Hyundai Accent cars to the Chennai city police on Tuesday.

Chief Minister M Karunanidhi handed over the keys of the cars to the Commissioner of Police Letika Saran in the presence of Director General of Police D Mukherjee, senior officers and ministers at a function held at Rajarathinam Stadium here on Tuesday. The CM also inaugurated the \"students traffic volunteer scheme\" project, to train college students in traffic enforcement.

Speaking to reporters, Ms Saran said that the city police would enhance their efficiency in attending to law and order, crime and traffic issues with the help of the new cars.

The 100 vehicles would be evenly distributed to the three law and order zones (North, South, Central) and to the traffic wing in the city.

The diesel cars would be driven by an officer in the rank of a Sub-inspector of Police, who would be accompanied by a police constable. All the cars would be fitted with wireless communication systems and possess a first aid kit, a digital camera, handcuffs and a public address system.

Students scheme

Ms. Saran said the new vehicles would help the police to move more swiftly to trouble spots. Under the \"students traffic volunteer scheme,\" selected students would be given training by the traffic police and will contribute their services for traffic management for three hours daily, five days a week in the city.

For this, the students would get a stipend from the Hyundai Motors India. Responding to question, Director General of Police D Mukherjee said the scheme would be extended to other cities in a phased manner.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"

What about the Patli-Gali? So they will have now a much better excuse for not catching anyone (they don't want to)

"I was following in car but he escaped from the Patli-Gali"

What makes me baffled is that the chief minister comes to dedicate the police car. Dont they have better things to do. May be he wants a ride.

DIO,
Having been in South India, you should have known better. CM's frequently show up at such functions to increase their vote share. Many people in TN villages are illitrate and when they see pictures in newspapers like this, they will think that the CM himself has bought and given such cars to the Police to catch the multi million thiefs at Chennai. It is just a show which either MK or JJ would do.
We all know that MGR would hug the poorest of the poor in public and we all know what lavish lifestyle he had and what a crook he was within the walls of his ramavaram residence (not that the currents CM or JJ is any better).
For every big building dedication , CM's, Ministers and MLA's would show up.
It is the "Spin that they can get" (as per your own words)
TK A
Sidenote : As far as i can think, These cars will just be for show. They will be parked at major intersections and that is it. In Chennai, no one can catch theives in cars. For one, the internal roads of chennai town are too narrow and congested for cars to move faster than pedestrians and unless the chase occurs in the outskirts it is difficult to drive and catch the culprits. I hope the Chennai police does not use these cars to drop of IG's, SI's., Inspectors children to school or run errands for their wives . (it frequently happens in the normal police cars)
Also in the event of a Bandh, the first glass that would be broken would be these Hyundai car's unless a steel mesh is fitted over the windscreen to ward of stones. Gypsy jeeps were the best since they had only one glass screen (the windshield) to be protected in a law and order /bandh situation.
